Bridget Phillipson wasted taxpayer money in a desperate bid to dilute the most consequential piece of free speech legislation in the last 15 years. As soon as she got her feet under the desk at the Department for Education, she paused the implementation of the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Act. The Free Speech Union successfully threatened Phillipson with legal action and she announced a partial U-turn. We offered to withdraw our case in the High Court if the Government paid a quarter of our legal costs — £80,000. Rather than admit that she had backed down, her pride got in the way. The High Court has now ordered the Government to pay all our legal fees meaning she’s cost the taxpayer over £200,000. There was no need for her to stop a law that would protect free speech on campus through ministerial fiat — bypassing Parliament — nor is there an excuse she wasted taxpayer money to defend her ego.
