As promised. Here is revised version based on some feedback: Scene 1: The Crash Site The escape pod lay half-buried in ochre dust, its hull crumpled and storm-scored. Smoke hissed from ruptured seams, then unraveled into the copper sky. Above, violet storm bands rolled across the upper atmosphere. The thin air muted the thunder, but distant strikes still trembled through the pod’s hull. Inside, emergency diodes flickered over bent struts and shattered panels. Arlen Vega sat slumped against the console, helmet sealed. A starburst crack across his visor splintered the diode light. Each breath rasped through his helmet. The suit regulator kept compensating for the pressure leak, drawing down his oxygen reserve. His HUD pulsed warnings in sickly red. Oxygen at 33%. Pressure integrity compromised. Suit battery draining faster than it should. He tried the damaged controls again. His gloves made fine adjustments clumsy, and the spider-webbed screen lagged behind his inputs. Static filled his ears, a flat, relentless hiss. He tried the Fleet bands first, then distress channels and civilian frequencies. The coarse-tuning dial clicked through its detents beneath his glove, but he found no traffic on any band. Vega keyed the transmitter anyway. The damaged monitor fed his own voice back to him, thin and garbled. “Hey. Hey.” His next few words vanished into static. “If anyone’s hearing this...” He swallowed. “My pod came down hard. Real hard. I’m not dead, but my suit alarms are screaming at me. Oxygen: 33%. There’s smoke in the pod. No sign of the rest of the crew,” Vega said. At a Fleet station far from the crash site, Jace picked up a weak, distorted transmission on his communications console. He adjusted the receiver gain until he could make out the words. The signal carried no position data. He opened the return channel. “You’re coming through,” Jace said. “I hear you.” Silence followed, long enough that Jace thought the connection had failed. A ragged exhale broke across the channel. “Holy shit. You’re real? Who are you?” Vega said. “I’m Jace.” He kept his tone measured. “Name?” “Arlen Vega. Cadet. Engineering track. Why the hell did I even say that?” “It matters,” Jace said. “Vega, I need you focused. What’s the immediate threat?” Metal scraped over the line. Vega grunted, and wreckage shifted around him. “Pod’s torn open. One panel’s burning. My oxygen’s bleeding out fast. Should I try to fix this wreck or get clear? The heat’s rising,” Vega said. Jace’s own readouts were useless. From Vega’s report and the noise on the channel, he pictured the ruptured pod around the cadet, smoke thickening as fire worked through a wall panel. He listened to the strain in Vega’s breathing and tried to judge how quickly his oxygen reserve was falling. “You can’t stay there,” Jace said. “Get clear of the pod now.” “Copy that. I’m moving,” Vega said. Static flared over scraping boots and the groan of metal as Vega forced his way through the wreckage. Vega staggered free, boots sinking into the fine sediment. Dust rolled around his shins before settling behind him. The land beyond the pod rose in black, broken ridges. Crystal spires crowded the slopes, their faceted sides throwing splinters of copper light across the dust. Vega turned slowly, scanning the terrain through the starburst crack in his visor. “Status. Are you outside yet? What do you see?” Jace said. “Dust. Like, everywhere. Glassy rock formations all around. The pod’s toast. Still burning,” Vega said. Jace leaned closer to the console. “Any sign of the others?” “Not yet. Just me,” Vega said. “Do you have a position fix?” Jace asked. Vega pulled up the last navigation packet on his HUD. The position field was blank. “Nothing,” Vega said. “We were thrown out of superluminal transit and straight onto a collision course with this rock. We barely had time to reach the pods before they launched. The Callisto never got a position fix. I have no idea what sector we’re in.” “All right,” Jace said. “Location can wait. If the Callisto came down nearby, it’s the only place you’re likely to find O₂, supplies, or shelter.” A column of smoke rose in the distance, threadlike against the copper light. “Holy… I think that’s the ship. It’s in pieces, smoke pouring out,” Vega said. “Then that’s your target,” Jace said. “Stay low. Conserve what you’ve got. Priorities are shelter and O₂.” “Understood,” Vega said. “Good,” Jace said. “Get moving. I’ll stay on the channel.” Vega started toward the distant smoke, the crystal field stretching between him and the wreck. At his console, Jace kept the channel open as Vega crossed into the crystal field.
