Some more insight about what we're up to.
Some more insight about what we're up to.
After 5 years of silence, hardware philosopher @maxim_xyz is back.
20/ We are building HARDWARE and PROTOCOLS for the Open Metaverse. The article: maxim.xyz/the-almost-met…
19/ All this won't be enough. We'll need those worlds to be genuinely fun, emotional, enriching,...! They won't be built by the successful companies of the previous paradigm (Fortnite, Disney, Riot, etc). They will be built by the next entertainment companies.
18/ Most assets will likely be free, but it will make it possible for unique brands to build a following and start publishing paying content to finance themselves.
17/ One could design a 3D model of a chair, and its "file" would specify who can modify it, pricing, keep track of remixes, and enforce those rules.
16/ Design remixes will have distribution and copyrights enforcement baked into them. Design files won't just be a binary of the assets anymore but also be programs specifying their copyright rules. Those rules will be enforced by chains.
15/ This will make self-hosting more relevant as all those worlds will have the interconnectedness benefits of centralization without the downsides.
14/ Remixable-by-default software is more powerful with smart contracts. Worlds and programs will plug into each other without siloing (access to a shared state machine)!
13/ But ultimately, crypto will transform each of the principles I listed:
12/ Today, most crypto "metaverses" do not satisfy my listed principles. Their smart contracts are composable, sure. But the actual experience, the gameplay, is not. I can import NFTs, sure. But where is my store of easy-to-modify assets? Etc...
11/ Now the MOST IMPORTANT: It was fun, emotional, enriching,... We laughed a lot, made new friends, and learned from a group of friends worldwide. And that was ALWAYS the goal.
10/b it felt deeply connected to those virtual experiences. Rather than living in two realities (a "real" and "virtual" one) it felt like living in one continuum.
10/ The time spent in those virtual worlds felt valuable because it had ripple effects on life, People would film videos in our virtual worlds and publish those on YouTube They would stream on Twitch Make new friends and meet IRL etc... As kids, our real world was limited, but
9/ Monetization was hard but possible, It was *very* hard. But the prospect of it was enough to get a bunch of kids excited about expending our servers into multiplayer empires.
8/ It was frictionless to use, Having to download dozens of games on Steam to try each of your friend's projects would be a pain. Instead, in Minecraft et al., we would just hop on a server, and content would be streamed to our client.
