Members of the FDNY Robotics Unit assisted in the rescue of a swimmer in distress on Saturday at Beach 108th Street off Rockaway Beach by deploying emergency flotation devices from above while providing real-time aerial support to responding crews. As surf conditions deteriorated, FDNY members, using drones, quickly located the swimmer and deployed two inflatable safety buoys, providing immediate flotation until NYC Parks Lifeguards reached the person and brought them to shore. "The Robotics Unit is a force multiplier during water rescue operations," Lt. David Melendez said. "Our ability to quickly locate victims, provide real-time intelligence to the Incident Commander and deliver emergency flotation devices within moments gives responders valuable time and additional options when every second matters. These rescues highlight how technology and teamwork together can save lives." ⚠️ We remind New Yorkers and visitors to swim only when lifeguards are on duty, follow the posted safety signs, and to stay alert to changing water conditions.

It's still summer, and we want New Yorkers and visitors to stay safe at the beach. Last week, the FDNY joined other city agencies and Rising Tide Effect, a nonprofit organization that provides swimming lessons and water safety education to underserved communities, for the fourth year of Water Rescue Demo Day at Rockaway Beach. As the warm weather continues, please remember to swim only where lifeguards are present, adhere to posted safety signs and warnings, and never leave children unattended.

FDNY officials joined New York City Councilmember Linda Lee at Engine 251 on Friday for a check presentation of $7 million for a multi-component renovation of the firehouse, including the replacement of the apparatus floor. This critical investment will help modernize the facility, improve working conditions for our members and ensure Engine 251 remains prepared to serve and protect the community for years to come. The Department thanks Councilmember Lee for her continued support of New York's Bravest.

At 9:52 a.m. Saturday, the FDNY received a report of a fire at 132-17 41st Road in Queens. Upon arrival, units encountered two buildings fully involved in fire with extension to a third building. "Our engine companies moved in with multiple handlines in all of these buildings—very aggressively, very deliberately," Chief of Fire Operations Kevin Woods said. "Many lives are saved by the proper positioning of hoselines." With a report of people trapped, members from Rescue 4 got above the fire on the second floor of the main fire building and rescued an occupant. They made the rescue under high heat and in zero visibility without the protection of a hoseline. There was a total of 21 injuries—17 firefighters and two EMS members suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Two civilians were also injured and transported to area hospitals. More than 250 firefighters and EMS members responded to the 5-alarm fire, which was placed under control at 1:47 p.m. The cause remains under investigation.

First Deputy Commissioner Daniel Flynn joined FDNY members, city officials and the family of Lieutenant Kenneth J. Phelan on Wednesday for the unveiling of a new commemorative street sign at the corner of 69th Lane and Eliot Avenue in Queens. As we prepare to mark the 25th anniversary of September 11th, the City is replacing more than 300 green co-named street signs for fallen FDNY and NYPD members with new red and blue markers—patriotic colors that pay homage to the first responders who made the Supreme Sacrifice. These commemorative signs will stand at street corners across the five boroughs, ensuring the names and legacies of our fallen heroes continue to be honored and remembered.

On Thursday, the FDNY celebrated the promotion of Deputy Chief John Feehan. Chief Feehan is the son of legendary First Deputy Commissioner William Feehan, who was killed when he responded to the World Trade Center on September 11th. He has dedicated his career to serving New Yorkers and carrying forward the values his father embodied: leadership, humility and service. As the Department prepares to mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11, Deputy Chief Feehan's story is a reminder that the legacies of those we lost continue to inspire the next generation of FDNY members.

The current class of probationary EMTs participated in a Spirit Run on Thursday morning—a meaningful tradition that marks the culmination of their time in the EMS Academy. The class ran together while carrying 343 flags in honor of the FDNY members who made the Supreme Sacrifice on September 11, 2001.

On Thursday, the FDNY promoted 31 members into leadership ranks during a ceremony at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island. The group includes newly promoted lieutenants, captains, a deputy chief and an assistant chief who have earned this milestone through years of dedication, sacrifice and service. As they step into their new roles, they will help guide the next generation of firefighters while carrying forward the traditions and values of the FDNY. "With your promotions, your work responsibilities will increase, and the Department will ask more of you," Chief of Department John Esposito said at the promotion ceremony. "When your next tour begins and you step into your new role, be ready to lead. Be prepared to make difficult decisions, support your members and uphold the standards and the traditions of the FDNY." The new officers will be assigned to units across the five boroughs.
