EL-RUFAI: Denied Bail, Envy Of Friends, Yet More Qualified Than All of Them. Today, I want to speak on Mallam Nasir El-Rufai’s outright denial of bail, which I know for a fact is a clear case of impunity and injustice meted on a man who served his country and his people with the highest level of transparency, honesty, and integrity I have ever seen in this country. Yes, people may argue about his methods, some may say they do not like his utterances, others perceive him as too arrogant, I understand why they may think so, but none can deny that he was transparent, honest, and most importantly extraordinarily competent in service. I have witnessed and followed a number of cases involving anti graft agencies. I have seen situations where a defendant was granted bail and the government refused to release him. In those cases, I found some comfort in believing that at least the judiciary was doing what was right and had not been compromised. But I have never seen a case where a man is outrightly denied bail in circumstances like this. That is what is most frightening to me, the thought of having our judiciary and legislature captured almost completely by the executive arm of government. This is unprecedented, and it should worry every well meaning Nigerian. Yes, I know some of you will cite examples of politicians who were denied bail, but what is different in the case of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai is that all of us know this man is not a flight risk. He submitted himself willingly to these institutions, in his own words, “I have nothing to hide.” In fact, when the anti graft agencies sought him, he was not even in the country. He could have decided to remain where he was, but he flew back home out of respect for Nigerian institutions and the deep rooted patriotism he has as a Nigerian. It is painful to watch a man like this be denied justice simply because of the political choices he made, choices that are his constitutional right. It is painful to see people in power resort to blackmail, framing, and planted stories because of one man they swore they must bring down, and yet they are clearly failing woefully. Now, while as his supporter and well wisher I am deeply unhappy with this, what is even more upsetting is the inaction, deafening silence, hypocrisy, and selfishness of his new friends and even some of the old ones. It is sad that we are counting over 70 days, yet you cannot count up to three times that any of them publicly spoke about the injustice meted on Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, with the exception of Peter Obi. In his case, I counted up to four times within 70 days. Many times, I find myself wondering and trying to find reasons for their silence, but I always arrive at one conclusion, selfish interests and personal ambition. They feel that if they speak too much about him, they will only give him more relevance than he already has. So they would rather let the injustice continue than fight it. Yes, I am very angry about what is happening, and because of this, and for many more reasons, I want those who put him in this situation to lose everything. But the question is, lose to whom? To those friends who did not find him worthy of their proper solidarity? No. Like I said earlier, I would rather campaign for El-Rufai’s presidency, whom I believe to be the most qualified, than use that anger to support his friends who, as far as I am concerned, are comfortable with what is going on. Enough of all this “Let’s wait for 2031” The time is now, we want it, and we are coming for it. This the opinion of Imran!
