The USA has 800 military bases across 80 countries. Do you know how many the country with the next highest number has? 145 bases across 42 countries. And that would be the UK. So, no. These military bases are not to "protect" Americans. They are there to dominate the world through military power. If a military base on the territory of one of the 80 countries hosting U.S. forces is used to launch attacks against a sovereign state, it is entirely foreseeable that the targeted state will view that base as a legitimate military objective and respond accordingly. The people of countries hosting such bases should be asking why their governments allowed their territory to be used to wage war on another nation, often without meaningful public consent. Accountability begins with those who initiated or facilitated the attack, not with those who retaliated. Watching some Arab governments, and citizens (!), condemn Iran for striking military installations that were clearly used to launch attacks against it is remarkable. If those bases were indeed used in military operations against Iran, then presenting the response as an "unprovoked attack" ignores the sequence of events. So spare everyone the selective outrage. If you're unwilling to acknowledge cause and effect, or the role your own governments may have played, your criticism rings hollow.

Our analysis of Andy Burnham's statement: Burnham didn't use the term genocide and instead said it was a matter for the "international courts... rather than politicians" to establish accountability. This is the same as the Starmer government and is in defiance of most of the world's human rights organisations who are referring to Israel's "genocide". He said war crimes only "appear" to have been committed despite documentation by human rights groups and the UN, and the reason for the ICC's arrest warrant for Netanyahu. He said the UK should be "looking" at "further sanctions... on those involved in the violence in Gaza" but did not make the obvious call for sanctions on Netanyahu who is wanted by the ICC. Burnham said the UK should only be "looking" at a ban on trade in goods with Israel's illegal settlements (which is now the Starmer government's position), instead of explicitly calling for this now. He did not call to end all arms exports to Israel, nor for an end to UK military cooperation such as withdrawing the 2020 military accord or ending all military training programmes. We note his specific words. His statement was that (a) "many people feel" (only) that (b) at the "start" (only) of (c) "Israel's military action in Gaza" (not genocide) the Labour government "didn't get it right", but only apparently because Labour "was too slow to call for a ceasefire" (Yet the issue is not only that, it is that Labour has been supporting Israel through military, intelligence, trade and diplomatic support during the genocide).

Two important, maybe contradictory take-aways from this. The first is that this is a change in tone that has been forced by the left exercising its power inside but mostly outside of the Labour Party. Burnham is in office because the Greens helped destroy the Labour Party in May's local elections, which has scared MPs and empowered parts of the Party that wanted a change of approach. So to the extent that this an improvement on Labour's position, it is a reflection of how an electorally relevant and competent force to the left of Labour does impact on our national discourse and forces Labour to humanise its messages. And a change in tone from an incoming Prime Minister does have some, at least limited, impact on shaping our national discussion on Israel's genocide. The second point is that it is just tone. It's a three minute video for social media. It's not even set-piece for the cameras or in front of the national media. In the context of genocide, it's pretty thin gruel that many will undoubtedly find flippant and incidental. Certainly, the contrition obscures that on substantive policy, this is no different to the Starmer government's approach. No significant increase in sanctions, strongly implying that there will be no ending the F-35 carve-out from existing arms license restrictions, hiding behind (and effectively misrepresenting) international court rulings to not call out genocide or war crimes, and certainly no steps towards accountability for complicity for domestic actors. It is little different to what Hamish Falconer has been telling Parliament for months. And it is nowhere near enough. Doesn't even approximate being near enough, which will have to include a total and complete arms embargo, deproscribing Pal Action, and taking the concrete steps to prevent a genocide as required by the ICJ. So the left must now organise and use the power it has gathered to itself in order to continuing demanding and extracting the concrete changes that are needed to end this genocide and secure justice and accountability. If Burnham wants to cohere an electoral left-alliance to save his skin, some hand-wringing and watery eyes won't cut it.

Received a letter from Natwest threatening to close my 42 year personal account because "some transactions look like business transactions". I spent an hour on the phone unsuccessfully asking them to tell me which transactions.
