Over the weekend, I was reminded of something I have always known that there are people who genuinely believe that owning the latest iPhone or possessing certain luxuries adds value to who they are. As a result, they spend their last penny chasing status symbols. In some cases, women sleep around to acquire such luxuries or simply to show off their “vacations” in expensive hotels. Yesterday, I met a random fan who asked to take a picture with me. He said, “Let’s take it on your phone. Mine doesn’t take good pictures.” When he saw my phone, he said, “Celeb not using an iPhone 17? I thought you were rich, Mr P. Mukuyendera ma Fortuner but using an old iPhone?” He said it jokingly, but jokes are often rooted in what people genuinely believe. The irony was impossible to miss. A man who had just admitted that his own phone did not take good pictures was now questioning why I was not using the latest iPhone. It took me aback. Here was someone using a phone brand I had never even heard of, yet he felt compelled to pressure me into upgrading mine. I could only imagine the pressure he puts on himself to acquire luxuries simply for appearances. I just smiled and said nothing. Some mindsets are too shallow to engage. In fact, I felt sorry for him because that way of thinking can trap a person in an endless cycle of poverty. The truth is that without material possessions and the ability to flaunt them, some people feel they amount to nothing. That has never been the case for me, and it never will be. I had a voice when I was broke. I had a presence when I parked the worst car in the parking lot and still walked into every room with my head held high. I have that same voice and presence today, even when I pull up in some of the best cars in the parking lot. One of my closest friends is a billionaire who owns major businesses, yet he still uses an iPhone 12. I use a better iPhone than him, but I do not own a quarter of what he has. Chasing status symbols and the latest gadgets is often an obsession of not only poor people but even those with a poverty mindset or those with little substance to their character trying to mask their insecurities. Material possessions may change how people see you, but they do not change who you truly are. True value lies in the content of your character. It comes from your intellect, confidence, competence, and purpose. Everything else is merely decoration!
