Olukoyede Cautions Nigerians against Vote Buying, Money Politics Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has called on Nigerians from all walks of life to work collaboratively towards ensuring peaceful, credible and transparent elections, warning that vote buying and other forms of financial inducement remain major threats to democratic governance. Olukoyede made the call in Ilorin, Kwara State on Wednesday, June 10, 2026 while delivering the inaugural lecture of the High-Level Guest Speakers’ Series organised by the Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies, CPSS, University of Ilorin, themed “Mobilising Critical Stakeholders for Setting the Agenda for Peaceful and Credible 2027 Elections in Nigeria.” The EFCC Chairman stressed that the Commission was firmly committed to combating the monetisation of the electoral process, describing vote buying, vote selling, and other forms of financial influence as practices that undermine democracy and good governance. He pointed out that political leaders who secure office through financial inducement are more likely to focus on recovering their investments rather than serving the public interest. “The EFCC is opposed to commercialization of votes not only for the reason that it is a financial crime, it weakens the foundation for good governance by compromising the political recruitment process. Leaders who pay their way into public office are unlikely to prioritise public good and accountability. Rather, recouping their investments becomes the overarching objective, to the detriment of the common good”, he said. He disclosed that the EFCC had recorded several arrests, prosecutions, and convictions of electoral offenders in recent years, including politicians, electoral officials, and citizens involved in vote-buying schemes. He assured Nigerians that the Commission would intensify efforts ahead of the 2027 general elections, stressing that vote buying remains a financial crime that would be prosecuted without fear or favour. Concerning electoral corruption, the EFCC’s boss stated that it had become increasingly sophisticated, with perpetrators now deploying covert methods, coded communications, and off-site arrangements to influence voters. “Vote buying manifests not just through financial inducement of voters but also through other material and commodity offers. Investigations are pointing to the fact that some of these criminal activities are no longer being carried out in the open. They are not even being done on election days. Codes are being used covertly. Linkages are being established with voters outside the electoral frameworks, all in a bid to influence them to follow some fraudulent routes. We are aware of all these antics and we are prepared to safeguard the integrity of our elections", he said The anti-graft czar identified stronger collaboration among stakeholders, enforcement of electoral laws, issue-based campaigns, media responsibility, impartial security operations, and effective conflict-resolution mechanisms as critical ingredients for credible elections. He urged political parties to build consensus around decency in campaigns and collectively reject vote buying, noting that inflammatory rhetoric and divisive politics had contributed to electoral violence in previous election cycles. Olukoyede also challenged the media to play a more proactive role in exposing electoral corruption, particularly vote-buying networks, while urging security agencies to maintain professionalism and neutrality throughout the electoral process. He maintained that proactive and coordinated security arrangements would significantly reduce electoral risks and enhance public confidence in the democratic process.

'EVERY VALID VOTE WILL COUNT' — AMUPITAN REASSURES STAKEHOLDERS AHEAD OF EKITI GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, has assured stakeholders in Ekiti State of the Commission's readiness to conduct a credible, transparent and inclusive Governorship Election on Saturday, 20th June 2026. The Chairman gave the assurance on Thursday, 11th June 2026, during the Stakeholders' Forum on the Ekiti State Governorship Election held in Ado-Ekiti. Addressing political parties, security agencies, traditional rulers, civil society organisations, the media and other stakeholders, Prof. Amupitan said the Commission had put in place all necessary arrangements to ensure a successful election. He disclosed that a total of 1,059,360 registered voters would participate in the election across the State's 16 Local Government Areas, 117 Registration Areas (Wards) and 2,445 Polling Units. According to him, the figure includes 66,664 new registrants captured during the Continuous Voter Registration exercise, while 2,103 invalid registrations were removed through the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS). The Chairman stated that logistics arrangements for the election were at an advanced stage, with plans to ensure the simultaneous activation of all Polling Units by 8:30 a.m. on Election Day. He noted that election materials were ready, ad hoc personnel had been trained and deployment plans were being implemented in line with the Commission's timetable. Prof. Amupitan reiterated that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) would be used for voter accreditation, while Polling Unit results would be uploaded to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) to enhance transparency in the electoral process. He also highlighted measures introduced to promote inclusivity, including the deployment of Braille ballot guides and magnifying glasses to assist voters with visual impairments and persons with albinism. On election security, the Chairman said the Commission was working closely with the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) and other relevant agencies to ensure a peaceful electoral environment. He added that the Commission was collaborating with anti-corruption agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), to curb vote-buying and other electoral offences. The Chairman further announced that the Commission had accredited 91 media organisations with 675 journalists for election coverage, as well as 98 observer groups comprising 96 domestic and two international organisations. Prof. Amupitan also informed stakeholders that, in addition to the Ekiti Governorship Election, INEC would conduct six legislative bye-elections in Enugu, Nasarawa, Rivers, Ondo, Kano and Kebbi States on the same day.

The Chairman's activities included a critical meeting with Electoral Officers (EOs) from the 16 Local Government Areas of the State, inspection of the ongoing Mock Accreditation Exercise in Ado-Ekiti and Ise/Orun Local Government Areas, and an interactive session with media executives on the Commission's readiness for the election. During the meeting with Electoral Officers, Prof. Amupitan reviewed the state of preparations across the Local Government Areas, receiving updates on personnel deployment, logistics, voter accreditation arrangements, security coordination and the distribution of election materials. The Chairman stressed the need for meticulous planning and effective execution of all election-day activities, urging the Electoral Officers to address any outstanding issues ahead of the poll. Thereafter, Prof. Amupitan proceeded to selected polling units in Ado-Ekiti and Ise/Orun Local Government Areas to observe the Mock Accreditation Exercise, a key component of the Commission's quality assurance process designed to test the functionality of election technology before Election Day. The Chairman expressed satisfaction with the performance of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), noting that the exercise demonstrated the Commission's preparedness to conduct a seamless accreditation process on election day. Speaking later during an interactive session with media executives at the INEC State Office in Ado-Ekiti, Prof. Amupitan assured Nigerians that the Commission was fully prepared to conduct a credible, transparent and peaceful election.
