They watched Iraq burn on television and called it Shock and Awe. Shock and Awe. They named the massacre of a civilian population after the experience of watching it from a safe distance. Not "the bombing campaign." Not even the sanitized military euphemism. Shock. And. Awe. The aesthetic experience of the people watching. Not the physical experience of the people dying. This is what empire does to the psychology of its citizens. It turns atrocity into spectacle. It turns the suffering of distant people into a viewing experience with a brand name. And the people watching from their living rooms were not monsters. That's the point. They were ordinary people whose entire psychological architecture had trained them to receive distant violence as entertainment, as proof of power, as reassurance. The monsters are the architecture.

I spoke yesterday in Paris about how socialist policy can enable us to overcome social deprivation and ecological crisis, by aligning investment and production with democratically determined objectives. I noticed that some people assume socialism necessarily means 100% public ownership, but this is not the case. Yes, for many important reasons, we need public ownership of public services, utilities and the commanding heights, and yes we need a public finance system, industrial policy and credit guidance... But there's no reason we cannot have private firms producing consumer goods like watches, beer, etc - the key is that they should be democratically owned and managed, by workers or communities empowered to determine the objectives of investment and production. We know that when people have democratic control over production they are more likely to align it with social and ecological needs. Socialism is ultimately about economic democracy: extending the principle of democracy into the realm of production. Cooperatives are an important step in this direction.

A 25 años del fallecimiento de Alekséi Marésiev, piloto soviético y Héroe de la URSS, que fue derribado por cazas nazis en 1942, cayó en territorio enemigo y se arrastró herido durante 18 días hacia territorio soviético, perdiendo ambas piernas. En 1943, tras recuperarse de sus heridas, Alekséi volvió a volar con prótesis y se vengó derribando 7 cazas nazis. Todo comenzó el 4 de abril de 1942, cerca de Stáraya Rusa (Novgorod), los aviones nazis le rodearon, después de una batalla aérea contra la Luftwaffe, donde derribó 4 aviones de guerra nazis, consiguieron derribarle y fue herido en sus extremidades. A pesar de ser herido gravemente, Alexéi Maresiev se arrastró durante 18 días hasta el territorio controlado por los soviéticos, durante su travesía de 18 días, las heridas se le agravaron por lo que tuvieron que amputarle ambas piernas por debajo de sus rodillas. Tras ser llevado a un hospital, estuvo más de 1 año y varios meses recuperándose de las amputaciones, Alekséi pidió que le pusieran una prótesis para poder volver a volar y vengarse de los nazis. En agosto de 1943, tras 2 meses de entrenamiento, volvió a la batalla... aunque esta vez tenía prótesis, eso no le impediría consumar la venganza aérea contra los nazis, aquel dia Alexei logró derribar 3 cazas Focke-Wulf FW-190 de la prestigiosa División Richthofen, la unidad de élite de la aviación nazi de Hitler. En total, Aleksei Maresiev completó 86 combates aéreos y derribó 11 cazas nazis, 7 de ellas con las prótesis. Tras su retiro, se graduó en la Universidad de Moscú obteniendo un doctorado en Historia. Fue condecorado con la máxima orden militar, fue proclamado Héroe de la URSS.
