One thing that has always bothered me is how well Ukrainians knew Russian culture, while Polish culture often remained surprisingly unfamiliar to us. Despite our shared history, traditions, religious connections, and a very similar way of life, many Ukrainians still gravitated toward Russian music, movies, TV shows, and books. In many ways, ordinary Ukrainians lived much more like Poles than Russians, yet Russian cultural influence was everywhere. Over the last few years, things started to change. From internet memes like “Kurwa Bóbr” to countless other cultural moments, Polish culture began making its way into everyday Ukrainian life. And honestly, it was wonderful to see. Ukrainians are sincerely grateful to Poland and to the Polish people for their support and help. I do not know a single person in Ukraine who wishes Poland harm. That is why the current tensions are especially painful to watch. We share a difficult history. There are chapters that brought shame and suffering to both sides. We apologized for some things, asked for apologies for others, and tried to move forward. Yet it seems that these historical wounds are once again being used to drive Ukrainians away from Poland and back toward the Russian sphere of influence. I will not judge the Polish government—that is the right of the Polish people. What I struggle to understand are some Ukrainian public figures who are now returning awards and turning disagreements into public displays of resentment. Perhaps it is because I have never received such honors myself, but if the Polish people gave me that kind of recognition, I would be proud of it. I would not return it because of political disputes or the actions of populists. If the Polish people themselves decided to take it away, that would be a completely different matter—and a personal tragedy. So let me repeat this clearly: I respected the Polish people before, I respect them now, and I will continue to respect them in the future. I am not here to lecture Polish politicians or criticize the choices of Polish voters. I only want to point out that these disputes hurt both Ukrainians and Poles—while they are welcomed and celebrated in Moscow.
