Thomas Elkins was an inventor, abolitionist, and a trained medical professional. He made an important contribution in 1879 to the development of refrigeration techniques (for human corpses) since preserving deceased bodies in the 19th century was challenging. He also patented several inventions, household furniture and items, during the latter part of his life. How his refrigeration worked: The device patented on November 4, 1879, included a covered trough or container kept at a low temperature by the continuous circulation of chilled water or other cooling fluid through a series of metallic coils. His other inventions: On February 22, 1870, his patented a table that could serve for dining, ironing, and as a quilting frame gained approval. (U.S. Patent number 100020) January 9, 1872, he also patented the design for an improved “chamber-commode” (U.S. Patent number 122,518). It combined multiple pieces of furniture into one item and featured a bureau, mirror, bookshelf, washstand, table, easy-chair, and earth-closet or chamber-stool. Dr. James McCune Smith Elkins was born in New York in 1818 and he was a trailblazer in both medicine and civil rights. He played a significant role in supporting the Underground Railroad in Albany, New York, during the 1840s and 1850s. After studying surgery and dentistry, he established a successful pharmacy in Albany, NY, and offered dental services. His contributions were recognized by the city, appointing him as a "district physician." Beyond his medical practice, Elkins was a dedicated abolitionist. He served as the secretary of the Albany Vigilance Committee, a crucial part of the Underground Railroad, assisting enslaved people seeking freedom. During the Civil War, Elkins served as a medical examiner for the 54th and 55th Massachusetts regiments, joining a group of Black volunteers led by Governor John A. Andrew. His commitment to social justice extended beyond the war, as he traveled internationally, including to Liberia. The Slave Memorial at the former slave market site in Stone Town, Zanzibar, Tanzania. Today, we honor the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition. Black people have always created, rebuilt, resisted, and transformed. Across generations, even amid unimaginable oppression, we have turned pain into purpose, culture into influence, and resistance into progress. May we continue to show up for one another, unite, create, build, and remind the world and ourselves of what is possible when we recognize our collective power. Observed every August 23, the day commemorates the uprising that began in Saint-Domingue (now Haiti) on the night of August 22-23, 1791, when enslaved people rose against the French colonial slave system. That resistance became a defining moment in the Haitian Revolution, leading to Haiti's independence in 1804. UNESCO established the day to honor the millions who were enslaved, remember those who resisted, and ensure the history of the slave trade is never forgotten. Today is about remembrance, pride, resilience, unity, and honoring those whose courage helped change the course of history.

there is a well documented history of federal surveillance, investigations, disruption and attempts to discredit major Black political and civil rights organizations and leaders, particularly during the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s. The FBI’s COINTELPRO program was expanded to include the Black Panther Party and other Black political movements, while Martin Luther King Jr. was subjected to extensive FBI surveillance and an effort to discredit him. National Archives records describe COINTELPRO operations directed against King, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and organizations categorized by the FBI as Black nationalist groups. What makes this history especially important is that government surveillance was not limited to people advocating violence or committing crimes. The FBI itself later acknowledged that COINTELPRO tactics included infiltrating organizations, creating divisions, spreading damaging information and attempting to discredit groups even when there was little or no evidence of unlawful activity. The program was formally ended in 1971, and its methods were subsequently criticized by Congress for infringing First Amendment rights. Martin Luther King Jr. is one of the clearest examples. Despite becoming internationally known for nonviolent protest and receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, King was considered a threat by FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, who believed he had communist influences around him. The FBI monitored King, attempted to undermine his reputation and even sent him a threatening anonymous letter. At the same time, other movements were being investigated as the federal government increasingly treated Black political organizing, Black nationalism and demands for racial justice through the lens of domestic security. This history does not mean that every government investigation was illegitimate or that every person targeted was simply an innocent activist. The Black freedom struggle contained many different organizations, philosophies and strategies, ranging from Christian nonviolence to Black nationalism, socialism, armed self-defense and community organizing. The important lesson is that political dissent and criminal activity are not automatically the same thing, and historical records show that government agencies sometimes blurred that distinction. Understanding that difference is essential if we want to discuss Black political history honestly rather than reducing it to slogans. The story of Black freedom movements is therefore not only about famous speeches and protests. It is also about surveillance files, political pressure, infiltration, media narratives, community programs, voting rights campaigns and the struggle over who had the power to define Black political demands as legitimate or dangerous. Those records are now part of the historical archive, allowing us to examine what actually happened rather than relying only on the stories that were told at the time.
