if i ran a restaurant in san francisco, i’d raise prices to psychotic levels. $49 caesar salad. $32 fries. $24 sparkling water. then i’d offer steep discounts based entirely on where you work. teacher? discount. nurse? discount. city employee? discount. barista? discount. artist? discount. openai, anthropic, meta, or google? zero discount, full price. surge pricing based on pure economics. is this illegal?

all human flourishing is only bottlenecked by just one more coffee shop waiting to be opened. the kingdom is at hand & it serves cortados.

this is one of the first very very early glimpses of ai’s impact on the supply side of the economy. the entirety of the western capitalist apparatus relied on allocation of scarce resources towards production of goods & services, but as the inputs required continue to go to ~zero for both bits & atoms (this will take longer), it’s likely the idea of pricing power will fade away over time (esp if there is real self replication). & if pricing power fades at scale, capitalism as we know it is roughly over. or on the flip side, in certain areas there might be one entity who has all of the pricing power due to some glitch (exclusive access to a single input, etc). either way you might get edge outcomes over the long horizon where most things become near free but few things become insanely expensive.

the most interesting / impactful ppl you encounter occupy a process in your mind that cannot be killed. years later they’re still consuming cpu cycles, memory, & even the occasional interrupt. all cuz they left you to compile an unfinished model of the world on your own.

he’s running. & he’s one charismatic mofo. there isn’t anyone on the republican or democratic side that can stop him if he goes full force. think about what he actually has.. name recognition with no introduction required. incredibly good policy instincts, a bio that’s relatable in a way no focus group could manufacture.. fallen, addicted, prosecuted, written off, & still standing. that’s a hellava comeback story, american’s eat that up for breakfast, lunch, & dinner. & most importantly he can communicate. irl & online, in a way that’s culturally fluent & philosophically awake. that combination w/ recognition + perspective + a story people see themselves in + native command of multiple mediums simply doesn’t come around often. most people who can do one of those things can’t do the other three. he has all four.

openai’s approach to competing with cc is interesting but flawed imho. this is prolly metrics positive in the short term but likely corrosive in the long term. this ad implicitly concedes claude is the thing people actually want & they’re just the off ramp for the frustrated. that’s simply not a flattering position for the long term.

today i spent 2.5 hours talking to someone in a park. it felt like 15 min. conversation is the highest order bit of human connection. shared interests, proximity, activities, & history helps but most of the things we associate with connection are downstream of two people being genuinely interested in what’s happening inside each other’s heads.

the dominant recreational activity in nyc is to dress up, take photos, go to a restaurant, “go out”, & then doing it all over again the next day. a huge amount of the city’s social life has collapsed into a loop of aesthetics cuz these activities map perfectly onto social media. they’re easy to share, easy to signal, & easy to consume. also ppl just love to be seen & now that can happen irl with social media distribution for scale. nyc still has incredible art, music, culture, comedy, parks, & some niche communities but if an anthropologist studied instagram stories, they’d probably conclude the city’s primary industry is making dinner/drinks reservations.

nyc has a weird collective blind spot around pure noise. the god damn govt officials will spend hours arguing about housing, crime, transit, zoning, schools, etc. while millions of people are getting their sleep fragmented every night by sirens, honking, construction, garbage trucks, & random dudes who do not shut the fuck up. if mamdani could somehow cut citywide noise by 30-50%, residents would probably experience a larger improvement in daily wellbeing than many far more expensive policy programs like city run grocery stores. why doesn’t anyone do anything about this?!? wake up zohran.

you're telling me anthropic & google are paying spacex ~$26b a year for compute?!! this is more than half the run rate of openai & anthropic just from compute deals & that doesn't even factor in the rocket launches at all. elon accidentally ended up owning a significant portion of three of the scarcest assets in ai.. power, chips, & physical deployment capability. the best lesson here is that if you’re selling picks & shovels during a gold rush, you don’t necessarily need to find the gold. you just need everyone else to keep digging. & also non software elon is pretty much unstoppable, like prime michael jordan type thing.

almost every time i’m on the subway in nyc, i glance around & inevitably someone is scrolling a shopping site. it’s almost always dresses, earrings, or handbags. or other fashion stuff. & the facial expression of the person def skews more smile. this is the new window shopping.

i just learned what “founder hounder” is at the party i’m at. remarkable.

building & iterating or even using a model feels less like engineering & more like taming a wild animal. or maybe a dragon or something. i.e. you don’t really control it. you obviously train it, you observe it, you maybe provoke it, ofcourse reward it, contain it (safety), then you slowly learn its temperament. you do this with new pets too. but this is all with insanely large levels of intelligence. one very large difference is that the model also starts to *trains you*.

money flows from places with capital surplus to places with talent surplus & gets capitalized into local land values.
