It's such a big deal we have this type of historic architecture in Benin that is about 100 years old. It may be the only or oldest surviving Antebellum architecture in Nigeria. This old American South architecture is not as well known in Nigeria as the old Brazilian architecture.

This mansion in Benin city built about 100 yrs ago by Mr Broderick, a prison contractor & transporter, is an architectural master piece with magnificent & elaborate artistic features. It's an American South Antebellum Architecture, with the characteristic grandeur & allegiance.
Interesting finds: According, to information collected, when Olokun worshipers are crossing the Iya (Benin earthworks) during a procession, they stop druming/singing 5-poles before the Iya & continue after 5-poles, done in respect of the Iya & the ancestors who created it.
Compare the hight of the bank of Iya-Ero earthwork serving as boundary btw Benin & Urubi, to humans & buildings. You can see a new building encroaching into the earthworks. The bank had been excavated & destroyed for the construction of a building, disregarding the 50ft rule.
Erhabor Emokpae the great; sadly died far too young at 49.
The panels commissioned for the refurbishment of Unilever House in London in 1979, also show William Hesketh Lever (1851-1925), the soap industrialist & cofounder of Lever Brothers, visiting Africa & his most successful soap brand, the famous Sunlight soap. Soap Advert, 1947
I have a female friend that is learning web development. Please can you point me to a good female community in tech (in Abuja or online) that can help & support her in her journey? @asemota please help me share, thanks
It’s a vast piece of history & story telling revealing that behind ever bar of Sunlight soap was a vast system of extraction, production, logistics, & international trade stemming from Western Africa. This drawing of the carving by Iain Jackson captures the details of the work.
Emokpae was a Creative Design Director for the design agency Lintas (also one of Unilever’s subsidiary companies). Founded as house agency for the London soap maker Lever Brothers in 1899, Lintas became independent after a merger created parent company Unilever in 1930.
Emokpae's work is housed at Port Sunlight, the modal village founded by William Lever in 1888, built to house Lever’s ‘Sunlight Soap’ factory workers, but today is home to a museum, beautiful architecture, a world-class art gallery, stunning parkland & thriving a community.
Do you remember this soap? Abi them never born you that time? 😁
"By & large, since evidence of an Iffe stylistic influence has yet to be convincingly demonstrated, a new & independent chronology is needed for Benin art, & this should be structured on internal evidence, rather than on an assumed continuum of Ife's naturalism (Lawal 1977).
The Ife finds have pre-fired cores without internal armature, with parallels to the north & east in Nupe, in the Ìgbo Úkwu finds & in extant industries of the savanna, but not for any Edo works (Williams 1967; 1974; Seromi 1987).
"Ife and Benin employed entirely different methods of the cire-perdue process” (Williams 1974).
Wrong narrative based on Egharhevba’s Ife-Oduduwa mythology corollary that Ife taught cire perdue to Edo. If so, nonaccidental similarities of materials & techniques should exist btw Ife brass finds (as few as they are) & any of the 1,000s of Edo brass but the result is negative!

A thread on the fractal architectural and settlement design among the Edo & Esan: 2 to 4 Ogua, a small room with only 3 walls & the smallest units in the fractal, are opened to a common Ikun (a room consisting of an Eghodo (water collector) space on the roof open to the sky).
This cotton cloth was acquired in the Benin area (Sapele) & exported to Liverpool by J. H. Swainson in the 1890s. The cloth is made of locally spun & dyed cotton and consists of 3 strips of cloth sewn together lengthways to make the whole.
On the #InternationalMonumentDay, I had the opportunity to engage with stakeholders of the earthworks in and around Benin city, including local communities, academics, govt agencies, archeologists, conservationists & other heritage experts, on how to conserve the earthworks.
One the examples of not knowing your history is not knowing that the body marks you call "Jazz" today is inoculation which has been practiced in West Africa since time immemorial. Your ancestors invented the basis of vaccination & you don't know. You ignorance pulls Africa down.
Gov Obaseki is leading Nigeria's delegation to its 2nd participation at the historical Venice Biennale art event. The 1st time Nigeria had a pavilion at the art biennale was in 2017 & it was commissioned by Obaseki. I commend Obaseki's consistency in promoting Art in Edo state.

Erhabor Emokpae the great; sadly died far too young at 49.
This carved timber mural by the Nigerian artist Erhabor Ogieva Emokpae (1934-1984) is the largest item in the Unilever archive at Port Sunlight, England. It's over 4m x 4.5m & made up of 35 individual panels depicting the story of palm fruit harvesting & palm oil production.

The sculptures from Ife use metal sourced locally or from Arab traders. In general, Benin bronzes were a copy of Ife bronzes which were way higher quality and had centuries of history. Benin bronzes look so bad because they _are_ bad. Africa was making way better art in Ife…
