Today, we recognize the 236th birthday of the United States Coast Guard. We extend our respect and gratitude to all who serve under the motto Semper Paratus — “Always Ready” — including members of the NYPD, especially our Sergeants, who also serve in the Coast Guard Reserve. Happy Birthday, U.S. Coast Guard. Thank you for your service to our nation.

On the 175th anniversary of his passing, we remember Sergeant Michael Foster, who died on August 4, 1851, from wounds sustained while responding to a dispute at a Manhattan bar. When another sergeant was assaulted, Sergeant Foster came to his aid and was fatally stabbed. He succumbed to his wounds two days later. A century and three-quarters later, Sergeant Foster’s sacrifice continues to be remembered and honored. #NeverForget #FidelisAdMortem

Family, friends, fellow members of the service, and members of the Staten Island community gathered for the co-naming of Francine Court as Sergeant Terrance McAvoy Way. The new street sign stands as a lasting tribute to Sergeant McAvoy and ensures his name and memory will remain part of the community. The SBA was honored to join the McAvoy family for this meaningful dedication. @NYPD70Pct

Congratulations to Sergeant Special Assignment Kerrissa Michael and Sergeant Special Assignment Michael Lukowski as they begin their retirement. Through their leadership in the Family Assistance Section, they showed compassion and a deep commitment to NYPD members and their families. During some of the hardest moments a family could face, they were there to offer guidance and support. The SBA is proud to recognize them and wishes them many happy and healthy years ahead.

Sergeant Murray served the New York City Police Department for over 28 years and was a United States Marine Corps veteran. We pause to remember Detective Sergeant James Maher of the 20th Precinct, who passed 107 years ago on July 27, 1919. Detective Sergeant Maher served the New York City Police Department for 10 years. He was fatally shot while investigating a homicide at the San Remo Hotel in Manhattan. Congratulations to Sergeant Juan Perez of the Quartermaster Section on his retirement after an incredible 34 years with the NYPD, including 23 years in the rank of Sergeant. The Police Anchor Club’s annual Coney Island Day brought together families who share a lasting connection to the NYPD for a day of rides, laughter, and time together. Among those who joined the outing were Police Officer James Bast, son of the late Sergeant James Bast, and Sergeant Special Assignment Kerrissa Michael, Detective First Grade Gloria Nelson, and their son Greyson, family of the late Chief Gerald Nelson. SBA Vice President Edmund Small and Detective Bureau Director Michael Daly were also there, along with the Sergeants who serve on the NYPD Anchor Club Board. We pause to remember Sergeant James McGiven of the 17th Precinct, now the 9th Precinct, who passed on July 24, 1876. Sergeant McGiven was walking home from Police Headquarters when he encountered a theft suspect being pursued through the neighborhood. He stepped in and took police action, and later died from wounds he received when he was stabbed during the apprehension.
