🚨 NEW: The head of the Federal Aviation Administration will tell Congress later today the agency failed to act on warnings prior to the January 2025 fatal collision between American Eagle Flight 5342 and an Army helicopter that killed 67 people near Reagan Washington National Airport. In January, the National Transportation Safety Board said a series of systemic failures by the Federal Aviation Administration led to a devastating mid-air collision ⁠that ‌was the deadliest U.S. aviation disaster in more than ⁠two decades. “Our airspace system was providing warning signals prior to that tragic evening. The issue was not a lack of data -- it was a failure to translate that data into action,” FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford ‌will tell a U.S. Senate Commerce subcommittee in written testimony. “That is the gap we are urgently closing.”

Only one chance in this lifetime… Like watching sunset at the beach from the most foreign seat in the cosmos, I couldn’t resist a cell phone video of Earthset. You can hear the shutter on the Nikon as @Astro_Christina is hammering away on 3-shot brackets and capturing those exceptional Earthset photos through the 400mm lens. @AstroVicGlover was in window 3 watching with @Astro_Jeremy next to him. I could barely see the Moon through the docking hatch window but the iPhone was the perfect size to catch the view…this is uncropped, uncut with 8x zoom which is quite comparable to the view of the human eye. Enjoy.

NTSB issues "urgent safety recommendations," saying helicopter routes near DC-area airport pose safety risk. Helicopters should be barred from a four-mile stretch over the Potomac River when flights are landing on Reagan National Airport’s Runway 33, National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy said in a briefing today as the NTSB released its preliminary report on the mid-air collision in January. The warning signs leading up to the disaster over the Potomac River were there, NTSB investigators said, citing data that detailed thousands of near collisions at Reagan Washington National Airport over years. All 67 people on the aircraft — 64 on the American Airlines plane and three in the Blackhawk helicopter — died in the collision. It was the deadliest aviation disaster in the US since 2001.
