Home Affairs Investigation Exposes Large Scale Fraudulent Luxury Car Purchases By Nigerian Nationals Using Fraudulent Documents A Home Affairs investigation has revealed widespread fraud involving luxury vehicle purchases in South Africa, with Gauteng identified as the centre of the scheme. The findings also connect multiple high-profile incidents, including a Cape Town McLaren crash, to fraudulent traffic registration numbers and irregular immigration documentation used by foreign nationals. The investigation found that 282 luxury vehicles were purchased in Gauteng using traffic registration numbers that were fraudulently obtained. The probe, presented to Parliament, showed that almost 90 percent of the vehicles linked to the investigation could not be matched to a legal immigration record. Authorities said Nigerian nationals were among those involved, with Porsches identified as a commonly purchased luxury brand under the scheme. A related case involved Nigerian rapper Prince Daniel Obioma, known as 3GAR, who was linked to a high-speed McLaren crash in Cape Town. According to the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), he overstayed a visitor’s visa in 2023 and later re-entered South Africa without a recorded movement entry. He was later identified as the driver of a R3 million McLaren that crashed in Sea Point in March 2025, triggering further investigations into his immigration status and the purchase of the vehicle. The SIU also confirmed that Obioma had initially entered South Africa on a visitor’s visa obtained using fraudulent documentation, later applying for a study visa that was rejected. Investigators said he remained in the country illegally before leaving and later re-entering without official records. His case formed part of a broader probe into corruption and document fraud within Home Affairs, alongside other alleged syndicate-linked activities involving foreign nationals and luxury vehicle acquisitions. The investigation further highlighted Gauteng as the epicentre of fraudulent registrations and noted that at least 40 ultra-luxury vehicles, including Bentleys, Ferraris, Lamborghinis and McLarens, were identified in related probes. Authorities said Porsches accounted for the highest number of illegal registrations linked to Nigerian nationals, while Deputy Transport Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa said government is considering scrapping traffic registration numbers, but warned that reforms must not disrupt trade and tourism.

The recent protests are centered on a controversial luxury resort development on the country's Adriatic coast, near protected wetlands and islands which the citizens say was sold (by their government) to Trump's son-in-law linked companies, Jared Kushner and daughter Ivanka Trump. The Albanian government approved a major luxury tourism development involving land and indigenous species. The protestors are calling for this "deal" to be scrapped and have threatened to make the country ungovernable.

Following an intensive check-in process, the travellers proceeded to BMA Immigration, where approximately 90% were found to be undocumented. Consequently, the Ghanaian Embassy was required to issue them Emergency Travel Certificates, single-page, one-way documents permitting a traveller to return only to their country of origin. Furthermore, most of these travellers were found to have overstayed their visas by more than 30 days, with some overstaying by a year or more. Let there be no misunderstanding: we will vigorously defend any frivolous or baseless lawsuit emanating from Ghana against South Africa. Our initial hope was simply to assist the Government of Ghana in repatriating its citizens in a humane and cordial manner. However, we will not continue to tolerate this public spectacles, characterised by incomplete information and outright misinformation devoid of any diplomatic decorum. Make no mistake: the South African government remains committed to regional integration. We are, and will remain, open to discussing the push and pull factors relating to migration at a bilateral level, the African Union or any multilateral forum but Let us be factual in our engagements and not pander to unnecessary public spacteclaces that are devoid of any diplomatic decorum. Having been on both ends of violence and hostility directed at migrants, Ghana has invaluable lessons to impart. We are ready to learn from your wealth of experience in this regard, including how Ghana has managed social tension while protecting, exclusively for Ghanaians, the very sectors in which Ghanaians in South Africa thrive. As we have stated on numerous occassions, violence directed at migrants is an affront to our constitutional order. Our democracy is founded on the principle that none shall suffer discrimination on the basis of race, nationality, religion, gender or sexuality. As we navigate this complex and fluid situation, we are determined to uphold this promise.

An ATM leader raised a series of parliamentary questions this month focusing on foreign nationals in South Africa’s justice and governance systems, with government departments providing limited or no data on some of the issues while confirming significant spending in others. The first question focused on how many foreign prisoners who were granted bail failed to return to court. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) responded that it does not have electronic records capturing how many accused persons, including foreign nationals, were released on bail and later absconded. The NPA further indicated that while it records cases involving foreign nationals in both regional and district courts, it does not track post-bail compliance or return rates in a way that allows such figures to be verified. The second question raised concerns about how many members of Parliament and Cabinet hold dual citizenship. The Department of Home Affairs responded that it does not have the required data to confirm or quantify dual citizenship status among public office bearers. This mirrors broader limitations in government record systems regarding citizenship tracking across different categories of individuals, including officials and public representatives. The third question dealt with the cost of foreign language interpretation in South African courts. The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development confirmed that R76 million was spent on interpretation services for non-official languages between April 2024 and March 2025. The department said services are provided in both official and foreign languages, with demand driven largely by court cases involving foreign nationals. It also noted that thousands of cases involving foreign nationals were processed during the period, contributing to the need for interpreters across multiple languages, with Shona identified as one of the highest-cost languages.
