Maria Magdalena Jahn, religious name Maria Paschalis, (1916-1945) was a German religious of the Sisters of Saint Elizabeth... She was 29 years old when a soldier pointed a gun at her chest. It was May 11, 1945, in the village of Sobotín, just four days after the Second World War in Europe had officially ended. While the rest of the world was celebrating peace, Sister Paschalis Jahn was facing a personal nightmare. A Soviet Red Army soldier had cornered her and demanded her submission. When she firmly refused, he shot her directly through the heart. Sister Paschalis was one of ten Catholic nuns from the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Elizabeth who were murdered in a similar fashion during those chaotic months. The order, which was founded back in 1810, had a clear and selfless mission to care for the individuals society completely ignored. They ran hospitals, looked after the elderly, nursed the terminally ill, and sheltered helpless war orphans. When the Eastern Front collapsed in early 1945, Soviet troops pushed deep into Silesia. Widespread violence and looting quickly followed, causing total panic across the region. Anyone who had the ability to flee packed up their belongings and rushed westward. The sisters faced a definitive choice to either run to save their own lives or stay behind. Because their patients were bedridden, the elderly could not walk, and the children had absolutely nowhere else to go, the sisters made the choice to stay. Every single one of these ten women met the incoming danger with incredible bravery. Sister Acutina, a peasant’s daughter who had dedicated her life to teaching orphans, was shot in an open field while putting her own body between a group of young girls and a band of intoxicated soldiers. Sister Edelburgis, a forty-year-old nurse, was beaten and shot inside a chapel while trying to shield her fellow sisters. The remaining seven—Sisters Melusja, Adela, Adelheidis, Felicitas, Rosaria, Sabina, and Sapientia—all lost their lives following the exact same pattern of standing up against physical violence to protect their vows and the people under their care. The tragedy of their deaths was compounded by decades of forced silence. When the war concluded, Poland fell under communist Soviet control. Because the Red Army was celebrated as the official liberator, speaking about or publishing accounts of their wartime atrocities was strictly illegal. The Congregation of the Sisters of St. Elizabeth was forced to keep these stories hidden, even though they estimated that more than one hundred of their sisters had actually been killed by Soviet soldiers during that timeframe. The strict censorship finally ended with the collapse of the communist regime in 1989, allowing historical records to be opened and the truth to be spoken. This long journey toward recognition culminated in a formal beatification ceremony at the cathedral in Wrocław, where all ten women were declared Blessed. The story of these ten women is a harsh reminder that history repeats itself when the world chooses selective memory over uncomfortable truths. For three generations, political convenience buried the bodies of these protectors, proving that humanity often fears the truth as much as the violence itself. The red uniforms change and the decades pass, but the systemic assault on the vulnerable remains identical. Honoring these sisters means confronting the reality that the real enemy is not just the soldier with the gun, but the collective silence that allows the same atrocities to happen to women and children in conflict zones today. © We Are Human Angels #drthehistories
