Brunel (who built the GWR) set off a train from London and Bristol and the closest town where the trains met was Swindon due to their respective inclines from and to each other. 🤔

@HPlaysPiano Bristol has 2 time zones. Bristol time and Greenwich Mean Time. Bristol time is 10 mins behind and from the sun rather than when the country decided on a time to run all the trains on.

The problem with Old Oak is its not in the right location for a classical link to Euston without massive major engineering works even though there are tracks in that direction. But going along the GWR to its Brunel London terminus instead is almost a ready made solution.

IK Brunel's SS Great Eastern was launched #onthisday 1858. The ship was the largest in the world at the time and had to be launched sideways from a site at Millwall. The launch site can still be seen today. bit.ly/2Gcl579

#OTD in 1858 Brunel’s largest ship the SS Great Eastern was launched into the River Thames. The ship had a difficult beginning which included a fatal explosion. Later in life, she was used to lay the first transatlantic cable 📞 📸 Stereoscopic card of SS Great Eastern

@ColinMurray The Tamar Bridge pales into insignificance when compared to the Royal Albert Bridge which is next to it. The last thing built by the engineering genius that was Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
