In New Orleans I could not sleep. The city was still awake at two in the morning. I refused to be the first to quit. I found a place called Cafe du Monde. Three items on the menu. Beignets. Cafe au lait. Orange juice. Three items since 1862. I bowed to the menu. Jerome brought three beignets without asking. Golden squares buried under a mountain of powdered sugar. The dough underneath was a rumor. I picked one up like a civilized man. The sugar detonated. My shirt. My hands. The table. A woman to my left minding her own business at two in the morning. She did not flinch. She was already white. The man next to her was white. The chair behind her was white. The whole cafe was a joyful crime scene and nobody was investigating. I tried to brush the sugar off my shirt. It got worse. I tried harder. Worse still. Jerome watched me the way a zookeeper watches a new animal figure out the enclosure. "Does the sugar always do this." "Every time." "Has no one in a hundred and sixty years considered reducing—" "That IS the amount." I gave up. I ate the second beignet with no precautions. Sugar went into my hair. A man across the room raised his coffee cup at me. I had joined something. The cafe au lait was bitter with chicory and rude about it. Jazz from somewhere I could not see. An old couple sharing one plate, both white as ghosts, laughing. In my country, beauty is controlled. A garden trimmed. A tea poured without a drop. In New Orleans, beauty lands on your suit and does not apologize. I sat in the sugar until sunrise. I did not brush off a single grain.

Very much worth watching! The engineers behind Viking knew their work would outlive the mission itself. We build on their success as the next generation will build on ours.

First time I recall holding the flag out the forward hatch was September 2019 after a flight into Hurricane Dorian. It had stalled over the Bahamas for several days and we had been flying a grueling pace for what seemed like a week and a half. One of the Public Affairs guys wants to get a flag shot and I’m gonna hold it out the hatch. I’m sure the AF1 folks have a whole official way to do all this but we don’t. The largest flag I can lay my hands on is an interment flag which is roughly 5’x10’ and made of heavy canvas. No idea what to use for a pole so I expropriate the fuel tank dip stick from the back of the plane. You can see the T shape thingy of the dip stick next to the stars. Some 550 cord and duct tape bring the whole package together. We land after the storm and the idea is that PA will take the shot while taxiing back to parking. Problems immediately begin… because we are taxiing back headwind for landing is now tail wind and heavy canvas flag is not really flying at all. The pilots speed up and now the flag is actually flying but also bucking around like an enraged bronco. You can see one of my hands in a death grip on the fuel dipstick flag pole trying to keep it upright and not sucked into the #2 engine. I have 550 cord that is, in theory, securing things together but it’s harder than you might think to hold a 10 foot long flag upright whilst taxiing at 25 knots and a 12 foot diameter prop just 20 feet away. I’m also concerned the fuel dip stick might snap in half. It all turned out ok in the end and Public Affairs guy got a decent shot. There was another plane taking off directly behind us a few seconds before this shot was taken but the camera wasn’t ready or something. That would have been really cool… maybe one of these days I will try and make it happen. I now have a section of steel pipe to use as a flag pole with 550 cord and carabiners to ensure everything is totally secure.
