Sister Rosetta Tharpe is credited as the Godmother of Rock ‘N’ Roll. Before Elvis, Johnny Cash or Little Richard, there was Sister Tharpe- A Black woman who forged her own sound in a male dominated industry. She does not get the credit she deserves. —Sister Rosetta Tharpe (March 20, 1915 – October 9, 1973) was an innovative gospel singer widely recognized today as the godmother of rock and roll. Tharpe is the first known artist not only to use an electric guitar in gospel music but to give the instrument a melodic role as important as the voice’s role. During her musical bridges, Tharpe would give free reign to her formidable guitar playing talent, unfolding soaring melodic lines puncuated by deep chordal rips and the occasional jump and leg pump; in essence developing musical tropes in the 1930s that would later be adopted by rock and roll legends Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Little Richard, and Johnny Cash. Tharpe’s innovation was not always well-received, with traditionalists regularly criticizing and devaluing her innovation. Despite these attempts to derail her career or persuade her to adopt traditional approaches to gospel music, Tharpe remained deeply rooted in her religious beliefs and values and used her unique musical style to bring gospel music to audiences who would never have otherwise listened to it. On this day in 1882, Pioneering lawyer and judge Violette N. Anderson was born. In 1926 she became the first African American female attorney admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court. —Violette was born in London, England, the daughter of Richard E. and Marie (Jordi) Neatley. When Anderson was young, the family moved to the United States, where she attended North Division High School in Chicago, graduating in 1899. She then attended Chicago Athenaeum in 1903, and soon after, she married Albert E. Johnson. Anderson was a Republican and an active Episcopalian. She worked as a court reporter from 1905 to 1920, which sparked her interest in law. Anderson furthered her schooling at the Chicago Seminar of Sciences from 1912 to 1915, and the Chicago Law School, earning her LL.B. in 1920. She began a private practice after graduation--the first African-American woman to practice law in the U.S. District Court Eastern Division. From 1922 to 1923, she served as the first female city prosecutor in Chicago. After five years of practice before the high court of Illinois, Anderson was admitted to practice with the Supreme Court of the United States, becoming the first African-American woman to attain this stature. This achievement set a precedent that allowed other black women to do the same. Anderson also belonged to the Federal Colored Women's Clubs, was president of Friendly Big Sisters League of Chicago, First Vice-President of Cook County Bar Association, and secretary of Idlewild Lot Owners Association. In addition, she was a member of the executive board of Chicago Council of Social Agencies. She was also the 8th Grand Basileus of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. She showed her pride in them by bequeathing her summer home in Idlewild to the organization. Her life is recognized by the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., every year in the month of April as "Violette Anderson Day." Violette Anderson passed away in December 1937.—

On this day in 1994, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was sworn in as the first black president of South Africa. —Nelson Mandela was a revolutionary leader of South Africa who stood against the apartheid regime in his country. Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918, into a royal family of Xhosa-speaking Thembu tribe in the South African village of Mvezo in the district of Qunu near Umtata, Transkei (now known as Eastern Cape). Many south Africans called him Madiba. He was a global advocate for human rights. He was a member of the African National Congress (ANC) party beginning in the 1940s, he was the leader of both peaceful and arm protests against the white minority in the racially divided South Africa. His anti-apartheid movements landed him in prison for nearly three decades and this made him the face of anti-apartheid movements both within his country and internationally. He was released in 1990 and he participated in the eradication of apartheid for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and in 1994 he became the first black president of South Africa, forming a multiethnic government to oversee the country's transition. After spending just one term in office, he retired from politics in 1999 and remained a devoted champion for peace and social justice in his nation and around the world until he died in 2013 at the age of 95.—
