Major life hack: Don't complain, ever. Nobody likes a complainer. They drain the energy of everyone around them. It's exhausting spending time around someone who constantly complains about things outside their control. If it's within your control, go do something about it. If it's not, you're just wasting energy thinking about it. Complaining gives too much power to the thing. Take back that power.

Yet my checked bag can't be over 50 pounds.

Couple I know bought their first house in 2021 with a 2.5% interest rate. Since then they had a few kids and now want to move into a bigger house. Problem is they won’t be able to afford the monthly payments on a bigger house with the current interest rates. Their only solution is to spend over $150k on renovations to expand and improve their existing house.

I saw this movie for the first time when I was like 13 and could not figure out why my dad was acting like it had given him genuine ptsd until i watched it again years later and went 'oh yeah that makes more sense'

Caller: I’m going to retire in about three years at 76. I have no mutual funds, no 401k. My question is, should I buy or rent at that time, at 76? ​Dave Ramsey: Okay. How would you be able to buy if you don't have any money? ​Caller: Currently, my income is $4,500 a month. $2,000 is going to rent, $2,000 is going to student loan, and I spend $500 on living expenses. ​Dave Ramsey: You're 70 years old and you have a student loan? ​Caller: Yes. I will pay it off. ​Dave Ramsey: What's the balance on it? ​Caller: $12,000. So I'm paying $2,000 a month on that. ​Dave Ramsey: All right. I'm really curious how you end up with a student loan at your age. How did you do that? ​Caller: I paid the interest only for a long time, since 2005, I guess. That's when I graduated. ​Dave Ramsey: You graduated 18 years ago, and your degree is in what? ​Caller: That particular degree was in communications. ​Dave Ramsey: Okay. And what do you do for a living? ​Caller: I'm a quality inspector. ​Dave Ramsey: At retirement, you have to have monthly money to pay bills, buy food, and provide shelter. The largest line item in your budget for the rest of your life is going to be housing. If you're renting, your cost of housing is going to go up every year because rent always goes up. If you buy, at least you're locked in to what you're going to be spending on housing from this point forward. So, buying is good. Having a paid-off home by the time you get there is even better, and of course, having a nest egg to live on. So, do you have a pension, or are you counting on just Social Security? ​Caller: Right currently, I have a universal life policy that has a cash value of approximately $9,000 in it. I'm reluctant to cash it out because it has a long-term care rider of 50 months on it at 4%. By the time I retire, I will have approximately $500 in pension and $2,500 in Social Security, which will give me $3,000. ​Dave Ramsey: And you have no money in savings? At all? ​Caller: $1,000. I have my thousand. ​Dave Ramsey: I want you to cash the universal in and pay the student loan down, and let's be done with this student loan very quickly. Let's get that in the background as soon as possible so we can try to accomplish a couple of these other goals, which is housing and start to build some kind of a nest egg over the next three years. Basically, you're going to live on beans and rice for the next three years while you throw as much money towards housing, buying a home, and as much money towards a nest egg as you can throw.

Caller: My husband makes $975,000 a year but won’t allow me become a stay home mom. Dave Ramsey: \$975,000 a year? Caller: Yeah. Dave Ramsey: Okay! I think you could probably freaking struggle through. (Laughs) Caller: it's not so much the finances as it is, I think he has a worry that I'll never go back to work. Dave Ramsey: So? Caller: Like, I don’t know. I think because his mom worked like three jobs when he was... Dave Ramsey: Well, so? He makes \$975,000!

No pension” Dave: “How much is in all those accounts?” Caller: “$3,500,000” Dave: “What do you make a year?” Caller: “$175,000” Dave: “You understand that $3.5 million invested in good growth stock mutual funds, if it averaged 10%, would produce $350,000 in income without touching the nest egg. Which is twice what you make now” Caller: “But there are still going to be years when it's up and years when it's down” Dave: “The down years very seldom are below 5%. Hardly ever. Maybe don't take the whole $350,000. Maybe take $200,000 and let it grow by $150,000 to cover the down years. It's impossible for you to go through this money before you die”

Daniel: I mean, it’s a lot, but she’s a dentist now so Dave: Stop. You’re minimizing this. That education cost double what it should have. Many dentists carry this kind of debt for decades and never fully recover. This needs your full attention. Daniel: Okay. What do we do? Dave: What’s your combined income potential? Daniel: Probably $300,000 to $400,000 between us. Dave: Then you have a path, but it requires living like absolute poor people for the next three years. Every dollar above basic survival goes toward that $790,000. No vacations, no lifestyle inflation, nothing. You attack this with everything you have. Daniel: Three years sounds aggressive. Dave: It has to be. The alternative is carrying this for decades. Get serious about this today

Caller: "Why invest only 15% of my income if I can do more?" Dave Ramsey: "Because 15% gets you to retirement. More than that and you'll sacrifice the other steps." Caller: "But shouldn't I invest more?" Dave Ramsey: "If you invest 50%, you'll never pay off your house. You'll never fund college. You'll chase one goal and miss all the others." Caller: "But more money in retirement is better." Dave Ramsey: "A paid-off house at 65 with $1 million is better than $2 million with a mortgage payment." 15% consistently from 30 to 65 makes you a millionaire. Most people don't need more. They need the discipline to stick to the plan. The fastest path to wealth isn't always the most aggressive path. Sometimes it's the one you actually complete.
