We are a Church of all kinds of minds, and it was wonderful to recognise today at General Synod that our difference is a blessing. Neurodivergent experiences add to all of our experience, helping us to understand and reflect the glory of God. I shared my own experience of dyslexia and how I have been made in the image of God, called by name. Today we resolved to learn how to be a place where neurodivergent people can flourish, and where our welcome is for all.
Quite something that around the tenth anniversary of the Brexit campaign murder of Jo Cox he says he is the most attacked politician of the last decade. Well done Sally Nugent for pressing with Qs so many of her colleagues have decided to move on from because he doesn’t want to answer them
If you have a spare 3 mins and 45 secs today, watch this fantastic grilling by Sally Nugent on BBC Breakfast. The very first time I've seen Farage questioned properly about his £5M bung, and it's fair to say, he totally fluffed it. There are points when you can see Farage
“We cannot be anything less than courageous and revolutionary in our approach to tackling climate change.” As the international climate community gathers @london_climate to work towards solutions to climate change, we look back on some of His Majesty’s key speeches on the subject. 📽️ from Amazon’s ‘Finding Harmony: A King’s Vision’. #LCAW2026
Caroline Lucas: "We need to recognise that what happened on the streets of Belfast was being orchestrated by the far right, by Elon Musk, by a network of people who actually want this to happen, so it wasn't quite as spontaneous as it looked.. and that has to be stopped"
HE WARNED THEM IN 2014. POLICE ARRIVED IN 2023. If you came in as an emergency at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton and you waited, or you were turned away, or someone you love did not get the care they needed in time, this is why. The on-call surgeons were treating private patients instead. A consultant neurosurgeon named James Akinwunmi saw it happening. He also saw colleagues fraudulently billing the NHS for pay they had no right to. He reported all of it. Rather than act on his concerns, managers launched a disciplinary process against him. False complaints were submitted to police alleging he had threatened colleagues. Police took no further action. The trust never told him that. They then accused him of unauthorised absence during an approved sabbatical and dismissed him in October 2014. He took them to an employment tribunal. He won. The Employment Appeal Tribunal upheld the unfair dismissal finding in 2017. Then in December 2023, with a live police investigation already running at the hospital, the then-CEO of @UHSussex sent staff an email urging them to have the courage to raise concerns. Akinwunmi told @guardian the email was laughable. He said whistleblowers including himself had done exactly what the email was encouraging and they were sacked for it. Operation Bramber, launched by @sussex_police in June 2023, is now a criminal investigation covering over 200 cases of alleged surgical negligence at the same hospital. More than 90 are being treated as possible manslaughter. The force had to request extra Home Office resources just to cope with the scale of it. The Care Quality Commission separately downgraded @UHSussex from Outstanding to Requires Improvement. Inspectors found safety concerns had become normalised. NHS continuing healthcare (CHC) should fund care for people with long-term, complex health needs. But too many carers, like Mahersh, are left fighting a flawed process instead of spending precious time with loved ones. ✍️ This #CarersWeek, sign our petition to fix NHS CHC: action.dementiauk.org/fix-nhs-contin…
While Westminster obsesses over by-elections and leadership contests, an official report warns that within years our food and water systems could fail. I’ve forced Govt to acknowledge a suppressed report on ecosystem collapse. But Ministers still aren’t facing the scale of the crisis.
We've written to the Secretary of State and NHS England CEO calling for urgent action to address unsafe doctor substitution by employers. The letter comes in the wake of our survey report revealing doctors' serious concerns over patient safety. 🔗 cdn.intelligencebank.com/eu/share/qMbw1…
hank you to Angie and the brilliant team at Brighton's Latest TV for covering Rare People and for choosing us as a charity partner. @LatestTVBtn Rare genetic diseases are often described as rare, but collectively we are many. And for too many families, a diagnosis is not the start of a treatment plan, it is the start of being told there is no plan at all. We want to fund proper research and clinical trials into rare neurodevelopmental genetic conditions, including the testing of promising existing drugs that may never be investigated because there is no commercial incentive to do so. Latest TV gave us the time to explain this properly and we are incredibly grateful to Angie and her team for helping us get that message out. Please get involved! share, donate, support, do a sponsored event , business partner with us, or simply help us tell the story. As @wesstreeting resigns, his claim of success sticks in the craw: ‘The results are in and I am pleased to report that I have delivered against the ambitious targets you set for me when I became your Secretary of State for Health and Social Care’ Here is another view (full podcast next Friday) @keepnhspublic @MrMarkEThomas @DAUK_GP @DrSteveTaylor Subscribe to our Not the NHS Again podcast (YouTube, Spotify)
Farage says his £5 million gift was a “reward” for Brexit. The rest of us were rewarded with higher bills and years of chaos. This grifter must not become prime minister.
🚨 WATCH: Nigel Farage says the £5m gift he received from Christopher Harborne was a "reward for campaigning for Brexit for 27 years"
Perhaps now we'll get a Health Secretary who will take on social care, rather than dodge it because it's hard. Who will end corridor care, not preside over its worst ever year. Labour needs to get a grip.
In this week’s (free to read) Daily Mail health section, I’ve written about why AI in medicine should not terrify us. It should excite us. I understand why people are scared of AI. Every few days there is another headline warning us it will take our jobs, destroy creativity or ruin society. But medicine is where AI could do something genuinely extraordinary. In the article I look at how AI is already helping detect strokes more quickly, how it can spot things on scans that might otherwise be missed, and how it has even been used to analyse huge numbers of Reddit posts about weight-loss jabs, picking up side effects that may not have been obvious through traditional systems. The same principle could be used in rare conditions, by analysing social media interactions and conversations between families, to understand the typical features of diseases that are so rare they are often barely described in medical textbooks. For my daughter Frankie, who has a very rare condition called DeSanto-Shinawi syndrome, that is so, so important. Because when a condition is that rare, parents often know things that the medical literature has not yet caught up with. AI could help gather those fragments of lived experience and turn them into knowledge that helps children like her. And it could go further. AI may also help identify existing drugs that could be repurposed for rare conditions. Drugs that are already available, already understood, and might just have an effect on conditions that have never had enough research, funding or attention. That is one of the ideas behind Rare People - The Research Charity, which we set up to help fund proper research into rare conditions and turn promising ideas into clinical trials. That is the point. AI is not just about robots and gimmicks. It is about finding patterns in huge amounts of messy, real-world information that no human being could possibly process alone. Not replace doctors. Not replace nurses. Not replace the human bit of healthcare, which is often the most important bit.But help us. Help spot subtle fractures on X-rays. Help detect tiny bleeds on CT scans. Help interpret complicated pathology slides. Help make sense of blood tests, symptoms, scans and risk in a way that is relevant to the patient sitting in front of us. And, just as importantly, help us find the rare things. The diagnoses that are missed because no human being can hold every possibility in their head at once. When the car was invented, people feared it would mean the end of horses. It didn’t. If anything, it liberated them from some of the worst work humans had forced them to do. I think AI may do something similar in healthcare. It should not be used for nonsense. It should not be a gimmick. It should be used where it actually helps patients. Used properly, AI could mean faster diagnoses, safer care, fewer missed findings, better use of NHS resources and more time for the human conversations patients actually need. We can be frightened of AI, or we can shape it. In medicine, I think we need to embrace it - carefully, ethically and intelligently - because the opportunity to improve health is too big to ignore. Free to read here: dailymail.com/health/article…
It's the day of the month where I ask myself if I'm crazy to be thinking that people are getting sicker and sicker, and then the NHS Staff sickness absence rate data comes out and the answer is: No, I'm not crazy, and yes, people are just getting sicker and sicker.
Thank you to Public Sector Focus for covering Rare People - The Research Charity. The article explains why rare conditions too often leave families carrying the burden alone, with little research, no clear treatment pathway and not enough urgency from the wider system. It also sets out why Rare People was created: to fund ethical, patient-focused research into rare neurodevelopmental genetic conditions, support AI-led drug repurposing, and help turn promising science into proper clinical trials. For families like ours, and for children like Frankie, this really matters. rarepeople.org

In 2006 there were 165,000 hospital beds open in England Now there are 140,000 beds 25,000 beds cut in 20 years The NHS model hasn’t changed It’s just smaller!
What fresh hell is this?! A job advert for a haematology PA - with NO medical degree in a specialty with some of the sickest patients to: 🚩review unwell pts 🚩 LEAD ward rounds 🚩procedures including paracentesis, lumbar punctures & bone marrow sampling 🚩discharge patients
New advert on NHS Jobs ‘Physician Associate Haematology Specialist’ 🩸assess, clerk and review pts 🩸 participate and LEAD ward rounds 🩸paracentesis, pleural procedures, lumbar punctures , bone marrow sampling 🩸 discharging Pts 🩸be on a register that doesn’t exist
In 2006 virtually no one waited 12 hours in A&E Now it’s over half a million a year! It’s not the NHS model that’s changed It’s the politicians Vote well!
More lies and spin from no 10. We have Drs who can't get jobs, This is Streeting's 'Reform' his excuse to replace Drs with underqualified staff. Meanwhile, Rome burns, politicians, Royal Colleges, and patient safety groups watch on.
For over the last 2 years doctors have been warning that lesser skilled staff are being used to ‘deliver care’ There is NO shortage of doctors Doctors are in fact stopped from working in the NHS, made redundant or just forced out. The public is being sold out by politicians
