In recognition of the 250-year anniversary of the founding of the United States of America as a free and independent nation, Elder Quentin L. Cook and I discussed the importance of religious liberty and its underlying significance for the restored Church of Jesus Christ. We believe in religious liberty. As the Eleventh Article of Faith reminds us, “We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.”

Richard Elliott’s experiences with music precede his 30 years of service as an organist for the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square. He was drawn to music as a child, and he has had innumerable faith-building moments throughout his life, thanks to music. “It’s very easy to start doubting yourself and saying, ‘Do I really know how to do this? Can I make it through this?’” Elliott said. “But then, if you’ve prepared yourself and if you exercise faith, pray and make the Savior the focus, then you feel the reassurance of the Holy Ghost telling you that you can do this. And things work out.” In a Church News video — titled “Can I make it through?” — Elliott talks about overcoming mistakes and trusting in the Lord.

The Savior has commanded each of us to love God and to love our neighbor. We are grateful for the faithful efforts of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who strive to fulfill this divine commandment. Their service is a witness of discipleship.    My counselors in the First Presidency and I recently visited the Church’s new humanitarian center in Salt Lake City. This facility will serve an important role in preparing and distributing emergency supplies to meet global needs.    I express appreciation for members of the Church and for all who minister in quiet and consistent ways. I testify of Jesus Christ, whose light and Spirit guide the children of God in caring for the poor and the distressed throughout the world.     May we each accept and act upon this sacred responsibility to bless the lives of all of our Father’s children.

When we obey what we are taught in the temple with all our hearts, it makes possible our receiving the gift of peace.    During the Lindon Utah Temple dedication today, I shared that in the temples of God, we are taught the simple truths of the gospel of Jesus Christ: The Plan of Salvation, our relationship to the loving God who created us, and our divine potential to be with the Savior again, to live in glory and peace forever.     Each time you return to the temple you will, by the Spirit, learn more of Him and of His Father. The peace He promises us can come, even as the storms of life beat upon us.   Those feelings of peace can go with us in our busy lives, if we are faithful to the covenants we make here. Trials, challenges, and heartaches will surely come to all of us. None of us are immune from “thorns of the flesh.” Yet, as we attend the temple and remember our covenants, we will feel peace from the Lord.

Our Savior Jesus Christ taught us how to relate to one another. The great commandments in the law, He taught, were to love—God and neighbor. (Matthew 22:37-39)

Cuando por fin ganó dinero suficiente, hizo lo primero que dicta el corazón: sacó a su madre del asilo de salud mental en Londres y la llevó a una lujosa mansión en California. Quería que sus últimos años fueran perfectos. A veces, ella ni siquiera lo reconocía. Otras, su madre le metía trozos de pan envueltos en periódico dentro de sus zapatos. Era un eco doloroso del hambre atroz que pasaron cuando él era niño. Ese hombre era Charles Chaplin. Y su historia es el triunfo de la magia sobre la miseria. Nació un 16 de abril de 1889 en un carromato gitano. Su infancia fue una pesadilla de supervivencia: un padre alcohólico que los abandonó y murió joven, y una madre, Hannah, que perdió la salud mental tratando de alimentarlos. A los 5 años, Charlie ya estaba en el escenario. Pero el brillo de las luces no ocultaba el estómago vacío. Él y su hermano terminaron en un asilo para pobres por desnutrición grave. En 1913, el destino lo llevó a Hollywood. Durante un rodaje, el director le pidió que se pusiera un "disfraz cómico". Chaplin entró al guardarropa y agarró lo primero que vio: Pantalones holgados y una levita estrecha. Zapatones y un sombrero hongo. Un bastón y un pequeño bigote para "parecer mayor". En ese instante, nació "Charlot". Había nacido la Leyenda. A través de ese "Eterno Vagabundo" que no decía una sola palabra, Chaplin le gritó al mundo. Denunció las desigualdades, la falta de derechos y la crueldad del sistema. Sus películas no eran solo comedia; eran un llamado a la dignidad humana. Su discurso final en El Gran Dictador —la primera vez que habló en pantalla— hoy se escucha al nivel de los mensajes de Gandhi o Luther King. Un grito universal por la paz y la tolerancia. Pero el éxito tiene enemigos. Por su mensaje social, fue perseguido por la "Caza de Brujas" en EE. UU. Lo acusaron de comunista, lo incluyeron en listas negras y lo obligaron a exiliarse en Suiza. Le cerraron las puertas del país que él mismo había ayudado a construir artísticamente. Le tomó 20 años regresar. Pero cuando lo hizo, en 1972, la Academia le entregó un Óscar Honorífico y el público le regaló la ovación más larga de la historia. El mundo entero se puso de pie para pedirle perdón al genio. Chaplin se fue una noche de Navidad mientras dormía. Nos dejó un nuevo concepto de humanismo basado en la solidaridad. Porque él nunca olvidó quién era. "Recuerdo a esos bailarines callejeros que bailaban temblando de frío y de hambre", dijo alguna vez. "Yo era como ellos". Hoy más que nunca, necesitamos la magia de Chaplin.
