@SpaceKoala And to make it worse - 1/3 of Utah’s alfalfa crop is exported and the biggest buyer is to China. We’re literally exporting 40x the max projected data water usage directly to China in the form of hay cubes.

Yeah, it's not intuitive. Imo the shooter was aiming for the chest and shot high Here's an example calculation AI put together: Slant range (hypotenuse): 500 yards (~457 meters) Downward angle: 45° Horizontal distance: 500 × cos(45°) ≈ 500 × 0.707 = 354 yards (~324 meters) Flight time along hypotenuse: ~457 / 800 ≈ 0.571 seconds Drop if using slant range (as if flat at 457 m): ~1.60 meters (as above) Drop using horizontal distance (as if flat at 324 m): ~0.5 × 9.8 × (324 / 800)² ≈ 0.5 × 9.8 × (0.405)² ≈ 0.80 meters Why horizontal? At 45°, the perpendicular gravity effect is halved (cos(45°) = 0.707), so sag is much less. Using just the hypotenuse flight time overestimates drop by ~100%, causing significant high impact. Use data for 354 yards instead

It's called "The Rifleman's Rule" Gravity pulls the projectile downward vertically, regardless of the shooting angle. The drop (how much the projectile falls during flight) is determined by the time it takes for the projectile to cover the horizontal distance at its horizontal velocity component, not the full slant distance. Using the slant range would overestimate the time of flight for gravity's effect, causing you to overcompensate (aim too low) and hit high If you have a sloped distance to the target of 200m but a horizontal distance to the target of 100m you're going to be closer to the real bullet drop amount by aiming as though the target is 100m away vs 200m away. It's counterintuitive but the math proves it out. It's common for inexperienced marksmen to overshoot targets when they're shooting downwards. It's especially critical if you're like on a ridge and shooting down into a draw on a steep slope. The effect would have been minimal in the assassin's shot yesterday though because he wasn't shooting at a super steep angle - maybe a couple of inches

Sure, the situations are very different. But from a technical perspective it’s just objectively not a super difficult shot. Everything else about the assassination more heavily implies sophistication imo. Making that shot only shows that the perp had a little practice before - they didn’t have to go to sniper school
