Great Britain threw away 5GW of available wind power during Storm Dave and replaced it using gas 🔥 That's one and a half Sizewell C-sized nuclear power stations, or four Dogger Bank A-sized wind farms. Or to put it another way, it's a shit load of power. Why throw it away? Because our straw isn't big enough… Constraints on the electricity transmission network between Scotland and England (as well as further north in Scotland) mean that we can't move enough energy across the border without overloading the system. Imagine a cup constantly filling with water, if your straw is too thin then you won't be able to drink enough water before the cup overflows. In our case the straw is the electricity grid at the border, and the water is the energy generated by the wind farms in Scotland. Any overflowing water would be bad news for the grid so we do everything we can to avoid it. The result is that we pay generators in Scotland to reduce their output so the cup doesn't overflow. Wind farms are usually picked for this because they are the cheapest to switch off and can provide the volumes of energy needed to resolve the constraints. However, the electricity is still needed in the south (it's still thirsty) so what happens next is that we replace that lost wind energy at the last minute with electricity generated via (usually) gas. This is not only a waste of low-carbon energy, it's also expensive. This government can't be trusted to end the housing crisis because its ministers are bought and paid for by the developers, landlords and corporate interests who profit from it.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a better use of council money. Huge shout to to @Merton_Council for the improve of their shop parades in the region. Improving how an area looks has a major impact on the local economy. I always remember the story of broken windows in New York. The theory is simple. One broken window left unrepaired signals that nobody cares. So another gets broken. Then another. Until decline becomes the norm and feels impossible to reverse. The opposite is also true. One renovated shopfront tells the street that someone gives a damn. A business owner sees their neighbour invest and thinks , maybe I should too. A customer walks past and decides to go in rather than walk on. A landlord fixes the flat above because suddenly the area feels worth it. It’s not just paint and signage. It’s a signal. And signals change behaviour at scale. The before and after here isn’t just aesthetic. It’s economic. It’s the difference between a high street in decline and one with a future. More councils should be doing exactly this.

I’ve tabled a proposal to ban housing developers from donating to political parties. The housing crisis is too serious for big money influence. Developers profit from high prices and low standards - families pay the price. Ban developer donations. People before profit.

The problem the government has with hitting its self imposed housing target is it needs buyers to want flats. Currently they are shedding pounds instead of gaining. The distrust around build quality, rising services charges, leasehold and ground rents has soured buyers appetite towards them. This is a big issue in London, which is in dire need of more housing, as due to space constraints the only way is up. As a result construction is struggling to get started. Lower interest rates may help with affordability but until flats regain trust they will continue to flail @FT @valentinaromei
