Democratizing the Middle East was always a fool’s errand. Islamic tribal societies are incongruent with western forms of government. Allow me to explain: Tribal societies are honor based. It’s ok to screw your neighbors wife as long as you lie about it to save-face and not embarrass your family. If you get caught, the offended party might kill you, but you just need to not get caught & lie effectively. In western society, we value the truth over image. At least that’s the ideal. In tribal cultures, stepping out of the way to allow another man to pass on a sidewalk is not viewed as courtesy, but rather as weakness and subservience. If someone in a position of authority allows rocks to be thrown at them without harsh response, they can expect bullets next. This is simply how those cultures work. Islam itself is incompatible with individual freedom. It’s not only a religious, but codified set of laws that governs society. Attempting to tell a massive population that they must abandon their faith and accept our values and laws over the commands of their god, is an impossible task. Sometimes ancient tribal practices even take precedence over Muslim ones. Cultural Awareness is more than understanding Islam, but rather regional norms. Bacha bazi (diddling boys) is forbidden by Allah, but ubiquitous throughout Afghanistan. The most advanced countries in the الشرق الأوسط are monarchies where the ruler acts as a benevolent dictator. Under this system you find women doctors, rights for the poor, even massive charitable endeavors. You might be surprised how nice many of those people are, it’s simply not the western way of organizing society. Politicians and think-tanks are usually void of any real life immersion in the true environment which they thought they could reshape. The whole “we’re going to make them like us” theory was always a fool’s errand. Constant goalpost shifting is why politicians and those who have adopted dirty hippies political positions claim that we lost GWOT. We dominated 2 countries for 20 years. Demanding that Islamic tribal cultures follow the highest goals of ones based on core Christian values was never going to work. Al Qaeda was smashed, Saddam hanged by his own people. Uday and Qusay went out in a hail of bullets. Had the political class understood that the government the people truly desired was a form that was congruent with Islam, we’d have simply said “you’re welcome & good luck”. I’m not a NeoCon, I’m also not a member of Congress. I’m a Warfighter that retired at the end of 2020. I speak Arabic, I’ve shared meals with the locals in a few countries in both hostile and friendly environments. I didn’t vote to declare a war, I and my friends simply fought it.

People making the case for censorship often urge that destructive manias like this can be suppressed/soothed if we prevent people from communicating about them. And here was a perfect case: false information was being recklessly (or maliciously) amplified, leading to literal hate crimes. Shouldn’t the censors do something? But the mass-grave craze infected the censorship class, so opposition got targeted instead. At least one “disinformation” NGO categorized skepticism as “hate speech,” and Canada even saw efforts to criminalize so-called “denialism” (drawing an absurd comparison to the Holocaust). Good for the Globe and Mail to come clean.

The second half of this post is really perceptive and I think you are on to something. The first half where you cast the problem into white and black america is exactly what the demon is trying to get us to think. There are sheeps and goats - that’s real. Sports teams, races and political parties are all fictions - that we need to some extent to organize but they are ultimately not real. Dart, Carter and Winston are all preternaturally talented in a specific area. The less we deeply care about what they think the better we are.

The issue here is blindspots - I believe that the merely bookish, para- academic stance is more likely to produce stuff of interest and value than the academic. I like reading your stuff- including the occasional letter (the subscription) but there is a disconnect which this tweet embodies.

The strongest red flag was when leftists lost the ability to be funny. Comedy relies on subverting expectations to expose truth. Leftism subverts the truth to peddle lies. That’s why they can’t be funny, they can’t reveal the truth, their entire politics depends on concealing it.

Nous avons donné au monde Descartes, Pascal, Tocqueville. Et puis, dans les ruines intellectuelles de l'après-68, nous avons donné Foucault, Derrida, Deleuze. Trois hommes brillants qui ont fabriqué, dans l'élégance de notre langue, l'arme idéologique qui paralyse aujourd'hui l'Occident. Il faut comprendre ce qu'ils ont fait. Foucault a enseigné que la vérité n'existe pas, qu'il n'y a que des rapports de pouvoir déguisés en savoir. Que la science, la raison, la justice, l'institution médicale, l'école, la prison, la sexualité, tout n'est qu'une mise en scène de la domination. Derrida a enseigné que les textes n'ont pas de sens stable, que tout signifiant glisse, que toute lecture est une trahison, que l'auteur est mort et que le lecteur règne. Deleuze a enseigné qu'il fallait préférer le rhizome à l'arbre, le nomade au sédentaire, le désir à la loi, le devenir à l'être, la différence à l'identité. Pris isolément, ce sont des thèses discutables. Combinées, exportées, vulgarisées, elles forment un système. Et ce système est un poison. Car voici ce qui s'est passé. Ces textes, illisibles en France, ont traversé l'Atlantique. Les départements de Yale, de Berkeley, de Columbia les ont absorbés dans les années 80. Ils y ont trouvé un terreau qui n'existait pas chez nous : le puritanisme américain, sa culpabilité raciale, son obsession identitaire. La French Theory s'est mariée à ce substrat, et l'enfant de ce mariage s'appelle le wokisme. Judith Butler lit Foucault et invente le genre performatif. Edward Said lit Foucault et invente le post-colonialisme académique. Kimberlé Crenshaw hérite du cadre et invente l'intersectionnalité. À chaque étape, la matrice est française : il n'y a pas de vérité, il n'y a que du pouvoir, donc toute hiérarchie est suspecte, toute institution est oppressive, toute norme est violence, toute identité est construite donc négociable, toute majorité est coupable. Voilà comment trois philosophes parisiens, qui n'ont probablement jamais imaginé leurs conséquences pratiques, ont fourni le logiciel d'exploitation à une génération entière d'activistes, de bureaucrates universitaires, de DRH, de journalistes, de législateurs. Voilà comment on a obtenu une civilisation qui ne sait plus dire si une femme est une femme, si sa propre histoire mérite d'être défendue, si le mérite existe, si la vérité se distingue de l'opinion. C'est de la merde pour une raison simple, et il faut la dire calmement. Une civilisation se tient debout sur trois piliers : la croyance qu'il existe une vérité accessible à la raison, la croyance qu'il existe un bien distinct du mal, la croyance qu'il existe un héritage à transmettre. La French Theory a entrepris de dynamiter les trois. Pas par méchanceté. Par jeu intellectuel, par fascination du soupçon, par haine de la bourgeoisie qui les avait nourris. Mais le résultat est là. Une génération entière a appris à déconstruire et n'a jamais appris à construire. Une génération entière sait soupçonner et ne sait plus admirer. Une génération entière voit le pouvoir partout et la beauté nulle part. Je m'excuse parce que nous, Français, avons une responsabilité particulière. C'est notre langue, nos universités, nos éditeurs, notre prestige qui ont donné à ce nihilisme son emballage chic. Sans la légitimité de la Sorbonne et de Vincennes, ces idées n'auraient jamais traversé l'océan. Nous avons exporté le doute comme d'autres exportent des armes. Ce qui se construit maintenant, en silicon valley, dans les labos d'IA, dans les startups, dans les ateliers, dans tous les lieux où des gens fabriquent encore des choses au lieu de les déconstruire, c'est la réponse. Une civilisation se reconstruit par les bâtisseurs, pas par les commentateurs. Par ceux qui croient que la vérité existe et qu'elle vaut qu'on s'y consacre. I liked this not because I agree with it — I mostly don’t — but because I think it raises an important point. I read some pretty dense literature and theory as an English major and later as a CompLit grad student in the 1990s. I remember classes where texts initially felt almost completely opaque: The Canterbury Tales, Finnegans Wake, Adorno’s Aesthetic Theory. But the process by which they slowly moved from gibberish into intelligible, working ideas was valuable — and even pleasurable. A better example might be Blake. I took a fantastic Blake seminar where we read the canonical works, but once you get into things like Urizen or The Four Zoas, you are right at the edge of comprehension. You begin to wonder whether what you are reading is profound symbolic structure or simply hallucination — much as an earlier generation before Yeats often thought Blake himself was mad. Could I have been just as “intellectually productive” without wading through Jerusalem? Probably. But I do not regret it at all. A lot of this in my life happened through happy accidents. An adolescent obsession with Bob Dylan and the lyric about “Ezra Pound and T.S. Eliot fighting in the captain’s tower” led me to borrow — and never return — a slim Eliot volume filled with beautiful handwritten notes in the margins. I memorized “Prufrock,” “Gerontion,” and “The Hollow Men.” The Waste Land mostly eluded me until an honors seminar in college where the references and voices were slowly teased apart and connected. Some of the ideas from that class have stayed with me for decades. ChatGPT can certainly summarize The Waste Land and explain its references more efficiently than struggling through it alone. But I am not convinced that efficiency is the highest intellectual good, or that the experience of slowly entering into a difficult work is replaceable by summary.
