Netanyahu is trying to undermine one of the core building blocks of democracy. It’s every authoritarians dream to be able to control the judicial system. If he succeeds, others will follow.
@iamharaldur It has to be a red line - and hopefully something that all centrists can agree on.
@iamharaldur That’s what the Dems have been trying to do in attempt to expand the US Supreme Court.
@iamharaldur You may need sleep.
@iamharaldur Halli, you only have to look at India on how’s that’s working out.
@iamharaldur Try to be more informed about the Israeli political system. It has serious structural problems.
This is too reductive. Unlike, say, the US, Israel has only the Knesset; they don't have an equivalent of the Senate. The supreme court in Israel can veto new laws, which the US supreme court can't. The govt's complaint is that this vests too much power in unelected judges. I don't have a view on the correct way forwards for them, but treating it as if it's simply an authoritarian government trying to exert control ignores the complexity of the situation.
@iamharaldur Isn't that what Democrats plan for packing the Supreme Court effectively does?
@iamharaldur We see the same happening in Pakistan. It seems all such ruthless politicians are following the same manual!
