Why can’t we have a 4-day week for the students, then a whole day for teachers to plan, collaborate, etc? I feel like it’s a no brainer but no one wants to pull the trigger.
@teachcrap So, I get it. I really do. How do you propose we make this work when most families need to have caregivers working in order to pay bills/feed their kids? I know I’m going to get the “teachers aren’t childcare” pushback. But without revamping the social construct… how?
@ScienceIsLife17 @IWasInTheMiddle @teachcrap School is treated like career prep and shouldn't be. School should be learning for the good of education. We shouldn't be concerned about making sure the can sustain a work day. But also, our companies and businesses need new models as well.
@ScienceIsLife17 @gos_lynn @teachcrap There are tons of jobs that do not mimic the “workday” you are claiming. Entry level positions are often non-traditional hours. The school day shouldn’t be required to mimic that of the traditional working day.
@IWasInTheMiddle @ScienceIsLife17 @teachcrap You know, that makes me think of the school is childcare argument. I mean, it is. But for who? Probably middle class parents. Many of my students parents (title 1 rural), work rotating shifts, evenings, weekends. When I was a young parent I worked 11:00-9 four days a week.
@ScienceIsLife17 @IWasInTheMiddle @teachcrap There needs to be community supports for food security. All of the world's problems can not fall on schools and teachers shoulders.
