I was pleased to host our annual Tree Lighting Ceremony with this year’s theme “A Purple Christmas.”The purple lights highlight The Color Purple movie that was produced byTSU alum Oprah Winfrey. The Tree Lighting Ceremony was amazing. I wish each of you a joyous holiday season.
TSU attended College Day at Mt Zion Church-Nashville. An amazing worship service! Many students came down and gave their lives to Christ. Mt Zion gave $550,000 to HBCUs including $100,000 to TSU and $100,000 to Fisk. $200,000 in individual scholarships. God is truly awesome!
I was honored to receive the game ball from Coach Eddie George, as the @TSUTigersFB capped off a huge 43-20 victory to continue their winning streak! I was laughingly told I was the “best coach from the stands.”
TSU participated in the Inauguration of Dr. Claudine Gay, the first Black president of Harvard University! It included a round table discussion with about 10 HBCU presidents, discussing areas in which Harvard could partner with HBCUs. Looking forward to the follow-up discussions.
The Board of Advisors met with Pres Biden and VP Harris. We thanked them for their support which they will continue. I presented 4 strategies to improve HBCUs-infrastructure, student support, research, &growth. Pres also stressed the $13 BILLION owed to land grant HBCUs by states
I share with you a letter from the US Secs of Ag and Ed to state governors re underfunding of land grant HBCUs of over $12 billion!Underfunding calculated for TSU is $2.1 BILLION, highest of all HBCUs, and is critically needed for academic programs, housing and enrollment growth.
Today I announced my retirement as Pres of TSU-my beloved alma mater at the end of spring sem.I am privileged and forever grateful for this honor of a lifetime. As I prepare to hand over the reins I remain committed to TSU and to ensuring equity and access to higher education.

Commencement at Tennessee State Univ was incredible today with TSU alum Oprah Winfrey as keynote speaker. She was absolutely amazing! The students were inspired, family members were excited, and alums were proud. Thank you Oprah for who you are and all you mean to TSU.
Congratulations TSU Aristocrat of Bands for making Grammy history! Our band won TWO Grammys- BEST GOSPEL ALBUM and BEST SPOKEN WORD ALBUM. Celebrating Black History Month, AOB made history as the first collegiate band to be nominated & win the highest award in the music industry.

TSU College of Engineering is making protective face gear for Tenn doctors, nurses, and other health care professionals from 3D printers, to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Also, the College of Agriculture is making hand sanitizer. We can all help during this crisis.
