La comunità cristiana africana è quella che cresce in modo più vivace e abbondante: ma ha un nemico potente e aggressivo: il fondamentalismo islamico, che in varie aree della regione sta attuando una pulizia etnica, che è costata la vita a oltre mezzo milione di cristiani. Ripetete con me: oltre mezzo milione di cristiani, poi ditemi se sentite parlare di genocidio, di crimine contro l’umanità, di strage di innocenti. I cristiani africani hanno un nemico potente: il fondamentalismo islamico. E uno ancora più potente: l’indifferenza dell’Occidente, che scende in piazza e sciopera a comando, in modo selettivo e mai per loro, i martiri del XXI secolo, epoca in cui l’unica grande religione perseguitata è quella di Cristo. Mi sono spesso chiesta le ragioni del silenzio complice della stampa, di molta politica, dell’opinione pubblica e degli intellettuali, su questa strage che fa molte vittime, ma nessun rumore. Perché non importa praticamente a nessuno? È perché sono neri? È perché sono cristiani? È razzismo? Sono interessi economici? È odio alla fede? La ragione di tanta indifferenza, quasi imbarazzo, da parte dell’Occidente a condannare la strage dei cristiani africani sta nel fatto che questa strage rompe molte narrazioni e luoghi comuni a cui ci fa comodo credere. Rompe la narrazione che gli islamici siano tutti buoni e l’estremismo sia un fenomeno così microscopico, da non rappresentare una seria minaccia all’ordine mondiale. Il terrorismo sarebbe una reazione da schegge impazzite, e non un movimento strutturato e organizzato, che attua un piano strategico. Rompe la narrazione dei fan dell’ecumenismo, secondo cui, la convivenza pacifica fra le religioni è una condizione semplice e veloce, quasi automatica, senza frizioni e difficoltà e non un percorso difficile, che chiede impegno e reciprocità. Infine, per gli atei, rompe la narrazione che i cristiani siano sempre brutti e cattivi, che siano ipocriti, bigotti, che i loro preti siano lussuriosi o pedofili. La strage indiscriminata dei cristiani innocenti in Africa, costringerebbe atei e laicisti occidentali ad empatizzare con le vittime cristiane, loro che nei cristiani hanno sempre e solo visto dei persecutori e li hanno accusati di tutti i mali del mondo e di orrende vessazioni immaginarie. Soprattutto, il martirio dei cristiani africani dovrebbe snidare noi cristiani tiepidi d’Occidente, noi che spesso evitiamo di prendere posizioni nelle conversazioni sociali, per timore di alienarci le simpatie di amici e colleghi e di essere accusati di essere antiquati, gretti, bigotti. Noi che siamo uomini e donne di mondo, anzi, del mondo, di mentalità moderna e sotto sotto pensiamo che dare la vita per la fede sia un eccesso di zelo da fanatici. A monsignor Osório Citora Afonso hanno sparato, pare sia stata una vera e propria esecuzione. Lo hanno trovato ai piedi della croce, colpito al cuore da un proiettile. E io mi dico che il Signore, artefice delle sorti della storia, non poteva costruire una immagine più potente e simbolica di un Cristiano colpito al cuore e martirizzato ai piedi delle croce, e speriamo che questa immagine, che dice più di mille parole, finalmente ci faccia svegliare dal nostro torpore.

Nobody tolerates a near beheading on a residential street in Belfast. The question your statement carefully avoids is prevention. And prevention requires honesty about a pattern your government has consistently refused to name. A man in his thirties, a Somali national, pinned a man to the ground on a residential street and stabbed him repeatedly in the face and neck. Members of the public intervened with a hurling stick. A woman required hospital treatment for the stress of witnessing it. This happened in Northern Ireland, a place that has known more than its share of violence, and even there residents said they had never seen anything like it. Your government has presided over record small boat crossings. It has failed to proscribe the IRGC despite repeated promises. It has blocked the grooming gang inquiry for a year before being forced to concede it. It has spent £10 billion on asylum accommodation contracts. It has actively resisted measures that would have reduced the number of unvetted individuals entering and remaining in this country. The victims of these attacks are not statistics. They are British people, going about their lives on their own streets, who were failed before the attack happened. Failed at the border. Failed by a system that prioritises the rights of those who arrive illegally over the safety of those who were already here. Your thoughts are with the victim. So are ours. The difference is that thoughts are not policy. Thoughts do not secure borders. Thoughts do not remove individuals with no right to be here. Thoughts do not protect the next victim, whose name we do not yet know, on a street we cannot yet identify, from an attack that has not yet happened. How many more before the thoughts become action?

The student commencement speech spoke about Palestinians killed in Gaza and 1,000 Iranians killed in the recent war, while taking indirect shots at Trump. What struck me wasn't what was said. It was what wasn't. - No mention of October 7. - No mention of the 1,200+ Israelis murdered, raped, kidnapped, and taken hostage by Hamas. - No mention of the 40,000+ Iranians killed by the Islamic Republic for demanding freedom and basic human rights. - No mention of the tens of thousands imprisoned, tortured, and sentenced without due process. - No mention of the surge in antisemitism that has left Jewish students feeling unsafe on campuses across America. If you're wearing a keffiyeh because you care about Palestinians suffering in war, and the 1,000 Iranians killed in the war, then care about all victims. Care about Israelis murdered by terrorists. Care about Iranians murdered by the regime. Care about Palestinians who suffer under Hamas. If you’re going to publicly champion human rights and justice as a new lawyer, your compassion should extend to all victims, not only those whose suffering aligns with your political worldview. Justice can’t be selective.
