Foreign Editor's Five. Just back from Beijing. Officials are pushing a $1.6trn plan for "new productive forces", Party argot for a state-led industrial revolution. In the cover we critique Xi's risky reboot. Herograms to @john_hooper @jarmiles @AntonLaGuardia @arjun_ramani3
did you know that to get on and off stage the barbican steinway uses a personal, perfectly sized, direct-to-destination elevator (the best fact i learned today)

My grandfather was a civil servant in Indian govt so I grew up hearing stories about his adventures across the country. Never expected to report on its bureaucratic intricacies one day Fantastic book and I expect it to be the key reference on the topic @karthik_econ @ivishiknew

This is by far the best deck on Indian tech each year. It also isn't just abt startups--also covers macro, govt policy, R&D etc in a tech-relevant way

This is how the epic 2001 NBA all-star game ended. If you watched this year's game, you'll know how much the level of competition has fallen Shows just how much special athletes impact sports culture-the late @kobebryant was known to raise everyone's level at the all-star game

The @JaipurLitFest gave me the opportunity to interact with a very brilliant mind and a fine critic on global economics @arjun_ramani3 .
Enjoyed speaking with @MikeHilliardAus about my recent reporting on India's economy Though it opened up to the world in 1991 India has mostly been left out of global manfucturing supply chains. Good news is infrastructure and ease of doing business are improving...

US politics is an outlier, and should not be seen as representative of the rich world. Between 2006 and 2023, trust in national institutions increased in all of the G7 except the US, where it fell substantially.
Huge HUGE signing for us at The Economist, especially at the Singapore bureau. Very exciting.
Today is my last day at the @FT. Later this year I'm starting as Asia correspondent at @TheEconomist, based in Singapore. Writing Unhedged with the great @rbrtrmstrng has been a privilege. Rob brings the wit, wisdom and substance day in & day out. (1/4)
i’ve been thinking about Meta’s support for open-source AI all day, wondering what zuck’s business justification must be. you can’t run a $1T co on ideology alone. but when you google the financials of Meta ($134B/yr) compared to a co like OAI, ($1.6B) it starts to make sense:

Good article by Jed here. But a caveat: in Adam Smith style, we have good division of labor. Academic research produces abstract knowledge, JEP/JEL summarize state of lit, govt & IGOs produce updated statistics after academics create them. Not just that "academics chase novelty".
I was just the Under Secretary for Economic Affairs at the U.S. Commerce Department. Here's the economic research that was really helpful to us. (Thank you @mattyglesias for the opportunity to guest-post!) slowboring.com/p/the-economic…
Weirdly, I think this may be a feature, not a bug: Knowledge often advances by people who really really care about a thing digging into the corners that nobody else cares about.

chinese men who went abroad in the 80s are, in general, exceptionally good at formal wear, because to going abroad required pre-departure training courses that involved western attires and etiquette. and because suits weren't mass produced, they often had to go to a tailor.
Thanks so much @kyleichan (and all the others responding) for engaging with my lecture at @PrincetonCGI There seems to be some knee-jerk confusion---let me try to address that briefly, starting with the chips industry in India: 1/
Apple doesn’t manufacture iPhones itself. Foxconn mostly does. Yet Apple’s market cap is 40x Foxconn’s. @rohlamba made this thought-provoking point at yesterday’s conference while arguing that India should focus less on manufacturing and more on high-skilled services.

Pretty extraordinary how much public opinion on Brexit has now moved (+ been shifted by demographic churn) Raises the intriguing question of whether on other age-polarised topics (housing?), big moves might also happen faster than expected
