This is utterly embarrassing & should make Toronto taxpayers livid. Sports teams have to do that. Ask the RBC Open/Golf Canada folks. Ask Karl Hale & Tennis Canada & The NB Open. You gotta sell. You gotta grind. You gotta work. I am telling you because I KNOW - & people talk...Toronto has already missed its window to do all of this for the World Cup of Soccer. Bloated budgets (funded by the taxpayer) Way too many staff were brought on too early A $340K salary for an Exec. Director that had no experience w/ something so large or high-intensity These details are unreal: "Haven't sold (ONE! ONE!) sponsorship package in weeks" "Our commercial team are still working all the prospects they had on their lists" "would not disclose how much commercial revenue the city has booked for the tournament" - BAD SIGN These sales needed to be made YEARS AGO, not weeks ago, & not days before the tournament, when there's no leverage. Is FIFA a bad brand? No, despite the criticism. Is "Toronto" a bad brand? I don't think so - so combined - it shouldn't be this hard. Yes, Olivia Chow inherited a bad financial deal made by John Tory & city management - & they've made a bad deal worse w/ all of the above. This asset has gotten more toxic, no question. Exorbitant ticket prices, a lack of public buy-in, a municipal government that's SCALPING suite tickets! cbc.ca/news/canada/to… They have had a hotel tax on EVERY stay in EVERY hotel in Toronto. That's been the case since June 1, 2025. There's an MAT (Municipal Accommodation Tax) on every hotel room at 8.5%, Stay in a $300 room? The City of Toronto gets $25.50 - all theirs. No sharing. So how much has been hauled in? Where did it get spent? This is all quite unreal. Ask your City Councillor to get these answers. I'm working on it myself. The tournament will be fun. People are going to have a good time, but this has been poorly run since Olivia Chow became Mayor, & wasn't being run great before that happened. And cut off the coffee for the bloated staff - coffee's for closers.
