Money was a huge factor but Vince's own favourite "best of luck in rasslin, Ted. I'm in the entertainment business" anecdote speaks volumes.

@TheBarrylad That was after he came up with the term. He was just staying on brand.
@RossWBermanIV Is it? The amount of gusto Vince has put into this thing over the years doesn't line up with the idea it was a cold fiscal move -- even though I don't disagree that was a huge factor.
@TheBarrylad It’s like when Tony Soprano says he’s in “environmental cleanup” he cannot say the truth under any circumstances or else the house of cards collapses.
@RossWBermanIV But there's more to it than the verbiage. There's also WWE's style of wrestling/show over the years that has drifted so far from so many core tenets of wrestling which doesn't help change the classification of what it is, but just morphs it into something Vince finds palleteable.
@TheBarrylad @RossWBermanIV That’s more about what Vince thinks is good for his show than being “ashamed” of pro wrestling.
@Clint4000 @RossWBermanIV I would argue that's semantics and we're basically agreeing though. A bunch of things he dislikes are core tenets of wrestling, and a bunch of stuff he does like (specifically the stuff that feels like it apes bad TV dramas or horror movies) are very non-wrestling-y.
@TheBarrylad @Clint4000 If Vince made horror a part of wrestling, how do you account fir stuff like Kevin Sullivan, and literally any other cartoony stuff from before Vince’s time in the spotlight?
@RossWBermanIV @Clint4000 My point is not that he invented it, or there were no cartoons in wrestling before him. He didn't invent "entertainment in wrestling" despite being most associated with the term. My point is that so much of it flops but he won't change course because it's what he wants his show
@RossWBermanIV @Clint4000 to be. It's not just a case of going with what works. There have been dozens of faux undertaker characters that flopped in the last 20 years, but he still keeps trying with the likes of the Fiend because it's just what he wants his show to be, regardless of what works.
@TheBarrylad @RossWBermanIV That’s fair but I would argue it’s more stubbornness and being out of touch than being ashamed. Vince’s shows have been entertainment and character driven since he bought it.
