During my lifetime, indeed during the last ~20 years, ties have almost completely disappeared from menswear: you wouldn’t interview for a job (incl academic one) in 2000 without one…and now I sense it might be considered overkill (?) No normative claim, but the change is quick!

My Dad had ~this many ties in his collection—and didn’t work a corporate job or have client meetings or whatever. I guess politicians, TV anchors, funeral directors are the holdout, but won’t be for long. No professor (except me) wears them now, nor at fancy dinners. Wild!
@arthur_spirling Lawyers still do, though not as frequently or consistently as they did 20 years ago
@SteveInBrooklyn Right yes: what’s the story with court “dress codes” etc? Do judges insist lawyers wear ties?
