It’s one of the ironies of British politics that two of the loudest shameful voices and cruel policies on asylum now come from migrant backgrounds: a Pakistani-heritage Labour Home Office minister promising “radical reform,” and a Nigerian-origin Conservative standard-bearer demanding even harsher measures. Together they show how far the debate has shifted: parties now compete over who can be toughest on borders, and personal migrant stories are used to legitimise crackdowns rather than to humanise asylum seekers. The risk is that both left and right end up normalising a politics where the children of migrants help close the door on the next generation.

بيان تضامن مع الناشط البحريني إبراهيم شريف تابعنا بقلق بالغ نبأ اعتقال الناشط السياسي البحريني المعروف إبراهيم شريف فور عودته من بيروت، على خلفية مواقفه وتصريحاته السياسية السلمية المتعلقة بالقضية الفلسطينية والسياسات الرسمية في المنطقة. ويأتي هذا الاعتقال امتداداً لمسار طويل من استهدافه بسبب تعبيره السلمي عن الرأي ومشاركته في الحراك الوطني البحريني. إن تجريم الخطاب السياسي السلمي واستخدام القوانين الفضفاضة – مثل تهم “التحريض” أو “نشر أخبار كاذبة” أو “إهانة دولة أجنبية” – يقوّض أبسط معايير حرية التعبير، ويتناقض مع التزامات البحرين الدولية في مجال حقوق الإنسان، كما يبعث برسالة سلبية إلى الداخل والخارج بأن أي نقد لسياسات التطبيع أو التحالفات الإقليمية قد يعرّض صاحبه للملاحقة والاعتقال. نعبّر عن تضامننا الكامل مع إبراهيم شريف، ومع كل سجناء الرأي في البحرين، وندعو إلى: الإفراج الفوري وغير المشروط عنه وإسقاط جميع التهم ذات الصلة بممارسة حقه في حرية التعبير. وقف استخدام التشريعات الجنائية وقوانين الجرائم الإلكترونية لقمع المعارضة السلمية والانتقادات المشروعة للسياسات العامة. فتح حوار وطني حقيقي يربط بين الإصلاح السياسي واحترام حقوق الإنسان وبين أي أجندة إصلاح اقتصادي أو شراكات إقليمية ودولية. إن الدفاع عن الحقوق والحريات الأساسية، ومن بينها حرية التعبير والتجمع السلمي، ليس تهديداً للاستقرار، بل شرطٌ لاستدامته وبناء عقدٍ اجتماعيٍّ عادلٍ يشارك فيه جميع المواطنين دون إقصاء أو تمييز.
