During the last session of our D&D, I made handouts for my players. While I handed it to my players, they did not open it right away. They turned it over, checked the seal and held it up like it actually mattered. The whole table was quiet for few seconds. That’s the moment I know physical handouts are essential. Since last year, I have been making simple “parchment” at home using cheap brown paper, printing on it and aging it a bit. Nothing really fancy or expensive but once you put it in an envelope or add a small prop, it starts feeling like an object from the world! It is honestly one of the best and easiest upgrades to immersion at the table. So I’m curious… how much do you guys remember from your last session? My session usually starts with a group story recap have always kind of liked that moment. Although I as the GM lead the thread, everyone jumps in with something. One player remembers the fight, someone else brings up the city, another mentions an NPC. It is fun, but it is always fragments, and it ate away from the little time we had during our busy lives to play D&D.. After a while it started to feel like we were rebuilding the story from scratch every single session. I have tried a few ways to keep track of things centrally, but nothing really worked for our group. Either it took too much effort to keep updated, or people just did not use it at all. So after many many sessions like this, I put together something simple just for our table. It is basically a shared timeline where we write down the key moments after each session, and we do it in-character mostly. Nothing super detailed, just the stuff that mattered to each of the players. What happened, who we met, the decisions we made, and some random weird moments that feel unimportant now but I might decide to bring back later. This screenshot is what it looks like right now in my app realmbook.ai. It is still something I am tweaking, but it has already made a big difference for us. I showed it to my players, and going into the next session the recap went down a lot faster and smoother! People glanced at our notes briefly, and were referencing things mostly for laughs, and we got into building on each other’s memories, even correcting details in past notes. Man, the detail we remembered this way was really something else. It finally felt like one continuous story instead of a bunch of disconnected episodes. I have also started using it to create a short recap at the start of each session, which has been working really well so far. I am really curious how other groups handle this. Do you even do recaps at the start of the session, or rely on one person to take notes, do you share it, or do you just go from memory?

I have been experimenting with a really simple DIY miniature setup lately, and it’s honestly worked out better than I expected. Instead of buying minis, I use small round cardboard discs as a base and those little plastic card stands to hold them upright. I made a basic template to print character and monster art on sticker paper, cut them out, stick them on the discs, and slide them into the stands. Takes a few minutes and suddenly you’ve got a full encounter ready to go. What I like most is how practical it is during play. The stands have just enough grip on the plastic sheet I lay over my maps, so things don’t slide everywhere if the table gets bumped. Makes a bigger difference than I thought it would. I keep everything in a small box, so setting up encounters is quick and painless. Definitely feels like a nice middle ground between flat tokens and full minis. Curious what everyone else is using, are you sticking with official minis, paper tokens, or doing something DIY like this? Would love to hear (or see) other setups.
