APPALLING: Tallahassee Classical School principal Hope Carrasquilla was forced to resign after 3 parents complained that a sixth grade art lesson involving Michelangelo's David, the most famous statue in the world, was "pornographic." This is happening in the state where Ron DeSantis has emboldened ignorant parental protests with his crusade to remove history books and literary books that might cause even one child the slightest biot of discomfort. The principal was given at ultimatum by school board president Barney Bishop, who said she had to either hand in her resignation or would be fired. Children will be the main casualties in this philistine attack on education.
@ReallyAmerican1 Remind me how many nude beaches Florida has?
@ReallyAmerican1 Sixth graders are about 11 years old. I suspect 11 year old girls would have been embarrassed seeing the naked male form. Maybe sixth grade was a bit young for that teacher to introduce the children to such art.
@ReallyAmerican1 Oh look, one of the western worlds most famous pieces of art. A crowning achievement in art history, creating true living marble cut from a single block. A masterclass in sculpture proportionality. Republicans: Ban it in the name of small government
@ReallyAmerican1 Do you already changed name in the Republic of Gilead, or you are still the USA?
Classic misrepresentation. Very weird to ask 11 year old girls to draw this. It isn’t unreasonable for parents to question. It can be a slightly awkward visual even at college. Awareness of age-appropriate subject matter? Maybe an agenda? Seems a bit draconian to fire the teacher though. Maybe there’s some history there.
school policy, "This came a month after the school had informed the teachers that “potentially controversial” class topics should be informed to the parents beforehand, including the world-famous arts. However, due to some confusion, the letter about the controversial art lesson never reached the parents, although Hope claimed that she had drafted it herself."
@ReallyAmerican1 "Bishop [School Board Chair] emphasized that the nude sculpture incident was one of multiple issues with Carrasquilla. He declined to go into specifics, citing advice from the school’s employment lawyers."
@ReallyAmerican1 @JeaWins190 What about cherubs, are cherubs OK?
Michelangelo's statue of David is widely regarded as a masterpiece of Renaissance art and has been celebrated for its artistic and cultural value for centuries. While the statue depicts a nude figure, it is not considered pornographic or inappropriate for people of all ages, including students as young as 12. Here are a few reasons why:
