Laverne Cox stands as a contemporary trans Black pioneer. After joining the cast of Orange is the New Black, she became the first transgender individual to appear on the cover of TIME magazine. Additionally, she made history as the first trans person to win a Daytime Emmy.
Langston Hughes, a celebrated Black gay writer, was a key figure in the Harlem Renaissance in pre-WWII New York. Despite a strained relationship with a father who disdained his own community, Hughes embraced his racial identity.
