@InPoetsShoes I'm an average income single mum of an autistic kid. Me paying for her to go to a small autism-inclusive independent while living in a sink school area is equity with non-disabled kids in richer areas. If state schools were run equitably and ethically, I wouldn't have to pay.

I have no objection to anyone being proud of their school. That's a healthy emotion. What is not healthy is people in the top 10% income bracket claiming to have the disadvantages of the bottom 10%. That's deceptive to the point of being ludicrous.

@InPoetsShoes I don't know the exact percent of FSM, but it isn't 93. This is the deprivation index where I work. I have stats for Derby because I work in Derby. The reality is that many kids here do not have equal state school access to more affluent areas.

@InPoetsShoes Closing the independents entirely would actually widen the divide. Good school area house prices would rise, pushing the poorer kids out, SEND services would be hugely diluted, and children would only ever be able to access the schools in their home area, however terrible.

@InPoetsShoes Many state schools are, and some aren't. A child in Derby has 50% less chance of a grade 9 at GCSE than a London kid. The kids I work with, many among the bottom 1% of affluence, give grim reports of what goes on in their schools.

@InPoetsShoes That's not my point. If you want to take people from independent, you have to fix state first. Otherwise they have nowhere to go but back into the problem they came from.

93% of people are not poor. I work with people in the bottom 1%. They go to schools that 92% of the country can move house to get away from. The council doesn't just let them move somewhere better.

@markstretch Have you seen the text in the right corner ‘flavours of the working class’. I’m absolutely sick of the propaganda that 93% of families in the Country are poor / working class just because they use state schools. It’s incorrect, misleading and divisive.

I pay fees to compensate, and then tax on the fees. Let the rich feed their own children. They benefit greatly from the best state schools at the expense of the poor.

It won't happen because rich people hog state resources.
