For everyone else, a reminder that as this site implodes, Mastodon is a good place to preserve your social network as a backup. It's not particularly difficult to set up, and it's pretty similar functionality-wise. Not identical, but very similar. Let's walk through how.

First, you'll need an account. Mastodon is federated, which means it's not controlled by any single org. You join a "server" who hosts you. A bit similar to how you can sign up for email with several different third-party sites (or if you're brave, can even host yourself)

But don't worry -- in the same way that you can join Gmail and still send email to Yahoomail, you can join just about any server and see posts by people on other servers too.

One of the big "general purpose" servers is mastodon.social. It's a good default. But there are others too, if you want to join something specific. You can move later and take your followers with you too, so don't get too intimidated by this first step.

@pwnallthethings social isnt taking in any new accounts.
