Unless the prevailing scientific theory can be upended with a single simple question. Then we see evidence that the consensus is doing what it always did. Somebody does have a compelling ontology and for lack of any competing ideas, this wins the popularity contest and most scientists forget about it. They just accept it, defend it, and continue to struggle to understand reality, and never ask why.
The rational thing for a layperson is to take prevailing scientific theory seriously, but not to mistake consensus for finality. Science advances precisely because prevailing theories are challenged when observations, experiments, or mathematics expose their limitations. Newton was prevailing science. Then came Einstein. Einstein was prevailing science. Today we know General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics remain incomplete descriptions of nature. As such, the question is not whether a theory is popular, but whether it continues to explain reality more completely than its alternatives. Science is not a vote. It is an ongoing process of refinement against evidence.

Your framework doesn't require time to be a real thing though does it?
Now, I'd argue length is simpler, easier, and removes some baggage, but it is a measure, no more primitve than time. It can calculate an orbit with no real G, M, or time, but it isn't fundamental, what it measures is.

Universities had a moat until the late 1990s because they were the repositories of knowledge. Over the next two decades that moat eroded. The internet made information widely accessible. AI now makes expertise widely accessible. Universities struggled to find a new identity.
