Photographers know the struggle—you beg a bird to cooperate, but it has other plans. With this Painted Redstart, all my whispered pleas for an open perch were ignored. Even though my bird prayers were unanswered, I captured its fiery plumage despite the obstructed view. #birds

I found him beside a small stream in Idaho. Some birds looked washed out with muted colors in bright sunlight, but that is where the Yellow-headed Blackbird stands out. They breed in western North American marshes before heading south for the winter. #birds #nature #wildlife

For some, the American Robin is a year-round visitor. For others, its appearance is a sure sign of spring. I found one sipping water on a warm winter day in Texas. It had rained earlier in the day, forming several puddles that were too inviting to pass up. #birds #nature #Texas

Many birds, particularly smaller ones, are timid and prefer to hide behind cover. However, the Inca Dove is a delightful exception. Smaller than an American Robin, it is often at ease around people. They thrive in both desert and western urban locations. #birds #desert #nature

The Black-necked Stilt is an elegant bird, always ready for any formal occasion. I caught this one wading in lovely light just as another bird flew overhead. It turned its head to check for predators, revealing its striking red eye under soft sunlight. #birds #nature #wildlife
