Korean movies I enjoyed the most in 2022: letterboxd.com/filmowakorea/l… List in alphabetical order, with a caveat that DECISION TO LEAVE is the superior movie of given titles.
Film plan for 2023: - lots of Korean cinema - finish up Wong Kar-wai and Edward Yang filmographies - start Fruit Chan and Hou Hsiao-hsien filmographies - continue with Jeon Do-yeon and Moon So-ri filmographies - catch up on past Tang Wei movies I better start watching then!
Very impressed with Park Kang's debut film SEIRE. When the credits started rolling I still wasn't sure if I've watched a drama or a horror. It's all up to viewer's interpretation. And I'm all for it! @Five_Flavours
Five Flavours Asian Film Festival starting today! I guess it's time to do nothing but watch asian cinema for 19 days straight. Nothing to complain about :)
THE APARTMENT WITH TWO WOMEN getting deserved praise. Heroines are flawed and broken. Full of ire, resentment and mutual grievances. Their relationship strained, dysfunctional and most likely beyond repair. It feels gloomy and yet, eerily familiar. A mix I savour the most.
THE WITCH.PART 1 was literally a highschool drama for almost half of its running time. THE WITCH.PART 2 got rid of the highschool bits in favour of excessive cursing, alcohol swigging and more gore. So why does the second movie feel more childish in comparison?
ESCAPE FROM MOGADISHU (rewatch) A movie that I consider to be really good, but can't fully enjoy because one scene ruins the whole experience. That car chase scene with non-stop shooting is pure absurd and it ruins the tension and the excitement instead of building it up.
Happy to see the 8th Warsaw Korean Film Festival opening with the cinema fully packed. Not the grandest of all festivals out there, but surely closest to my heart. 14 movies playing this year. No doubt I'm seeing all of them.
DECISION TO LEAVE 2nd viewing Absolutely enamoured with it. The visuals, performances, intrigue, tone, editing and humour - I adore it all. To say that Park Chan-wook never disappoints is an understatement. He goes above and beyond EVERY.SINGLE.TIME. PS Jeong Seo-kyeong rocks!
EMERGENCY DECLARATION A messy affair, but disaster movies usually are just that. Han Jae-rim's plan to abandon logic in favour of more thrills and feels seems to work most of the time, albeit towards the big finale my eyebrows were raised more often than my pulse. Still, fun.
#SeoulVibe is a disappointing, charmless, boring, overly lenghty slog with annoying characters (yes, even Yoo Ah-in). It tried to be extra cool, but it failed miserably. Only positives were Moon So-ri (she's always great), costume design and that one song 어젯밤 이야기.
Me always: directors should break the rules, follow their instincts and go wild! Also me after watching CARTER: you've gone too far Jung Byung-gil, the movie rules are there for a reason! I appreciate the try, but sadly not the result. #CARTER
A DISTANT PLACE Truth can set you free, but it can also bring you down. 진우 knows this all too well, so he goes through life keeping thoughts and feelings to himself. When past catches up with him, words do come out eventually, but they are crude and painful. Brilliant movie.

I've been following Korean box office for a long while, but I've never seen it sink so low. Less than 7000 tickets sold for the highest local entry throughout the whole weekend. This is a complete disaster :(

NO MERCY FOR THE RUDE / 예의없는 것들 It's absolutely bonkers and I love it! First it punches you with the crazy, then it strangles you with the funny and finally it stabs you in the heart with the sad. Very appropriate considering that the main character is a contract killer.
This year I want to focus more on what I LIKE about movies. Recently I've noticed that while watching films I actively look for things that are WRONG with them. It's ment to be just a hobby for me, so why do I keep ruining the fun for myself?
Oh wow! Eternals is doing great in Korea. Is it because of Ma Dong-seok, or is it thanks to lifted restrictions on cinema working hours? I hope this is a strong sign of upcoming resurrection for korean box office.

Holy shit at fucking last, Jung Woo-sung’s new neo-noir action crime drama “A Man of Reason” finally getting a wide release in August, saw this film at Sitges Film Festival last year, one of the most gorgeous films I’ve seen, incredibly moody with great action 🔥🙌🙏😎
