When I sent my query for critique to Janet Reid, the @QueryShark, I was prepared for absolute destruction. I was chum. I'd be relentlessly torn to pieces. I wrote my e-mail, attached my query, pressed SEND, and tightly puckered my butt. I didn't expect her to be so kind. (1/9)
HIS RAGGED COMPANY had just come out of hiding after over a decade of gathering dust. The last time I queried it, queries were still mostly by mail and printed letter. I needed to learn how it was done now, and for just $100, the Query Shark herself would rip me to shreds. (2/9)
I wasn't a confident writer then. I was prepared to shelf my book. It seemed easier. A few days later, I saw that QueryShark reply standing stark and white and unopened in my inbox, and my stomach fell halfway out my ass. It took me forever to click on it. (3/9)
The internet's most critical query predator could have charged me...but she didn't. She could have absolutely taken my money, but she didn't. She didn't lie to me, fib me, or misguide me. Instead, she asked me a question. About my book. About my querying journey. WHAT? (4/9)
Sure, I was thrilled that my query looked great, but what followed was a series of e-mails in which she was legitimately curious about my novel, about what traction I'd gotten so far. She demonstrated intense kindness (without unnecessary platitudes), and - unbeknownst (5/9)
to her - killed the demons of doubt that'd been swimming in my head. She didn't know me, didn't need to be sweet, but what she did was mute that voice in my own head that pushed against confidence. In our last e-mail, she told me this: (6/9)
