1. Martial Eagle – one of Africa’s largest raptors, seen in South Dune. 2. Western Marsh Harrier – found in grassland and open areas across Central and North Dunes. 3. Northern Wheatear – a Palearctic migrant observed in Central Dune, Bumamani, and North Dune.
The mark of a healthy ecosystem is the presence of a high level of biodiversity. This past quarter, we have observed endangered birds returning to the Kwale mine, showing that rehabilitated habitats can support wildlife. Some of the birds sighted include:

The Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) is also fully planted. Through careful stabilization and revegetation, the TSF is being transformed into a safe and sustainable part of the surrounding landscape.
Led by GM Operations, Mr. Vickers and GM External Affairs, Dr. Wasunna, the delegation toured the North, South, Central Dunes and TSF. The Chairman also participated in a tree planting exercise and engaged with community members at the South Dune area of the mine. 2/2

As of January 2026, all mined-out areas at Base Titanium have been fully planted, marking a significant milestone in the mine closure process. The project has now progressed into the "monitoring and gapping" phase.
Through our world class rehabilitation programme and partnerships that strengthen conservation outcomes, we continue to demonstrate that responsible mining and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand.
We were pleased to host a team from the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) at the Base Titanium minesite for a tour of our rehabilitated areas, including the Central Dune, Tailings Storage Facility (TSF), the Biodiversity corridor and our indigenous tree nursery.
We also highlighted legacy infrastructure designed to deliver lasting benefits beyond mining, including the Mukurumudzi Dam, now supporting water supply through Coast Water, and the newly opened Mwaloya Road, which enhances access and connectivity for surrounding communities.
During the visit, the delegation toured the rehabilitated North and Central Dunes as well as the Tailings Storage Facility (TSF), gaining a first-hand view of how previously mined land is being restored for sustainable future use.
We were honored to host the Cabinet Secretary for Investments, Trade and Industry, Hon. @GovLeeKinyanjui Kinyanjui, along with a team from the Special Economic Zones Authority, at Base Titanium for a site tour showcasing our mine rehabilitation progress.
