Now is the time for the U.S. Senate to do the right thing and call a vote on crucial voting rights legislation. Future generations are counting on us to protect our democracy. I wrote out some thoughts about why this is so important. usatoday.com/story/opinion/…

The filibuster has no basis in the Constitution, and in recent years, it has become a routine way for the Senate minority to block important progress on issues supported by the majority of voters. But we can’t allow it to be used to block efforts to protect our democracy.

That’s why I fully support @POTUS’s call to modify Senate rules as necessary to make sure pending voting rights legislation gets called for a vote. And every American who cares about the survival of our most cherished institutions should support the President’s call as well.

@BarackObama If you have to change the rules to get your bills passed, then your bills don’t deserve to be passed

@BarackObama "If the majority chooses to end the filibuster, if they choose to change the rules and put an end to Democratic debate, then the fighting and the bitterness and the gridlock will only get worse," Obama said. (While a sitting Senator)

@BarackObama @BarackObama I totally agree Mr. 44th President. You're an Amazing man and you were a Great President.

@BarackObama The push towards autocracy has to be stopped at all cost. The filibuster must not lead to the death of the democracy.

@BarackObama I’m old enough to remember when you used the filibuster but hey

@BarackObama It's easier to kill the filibuster than lose democracy, isn't it?

@BarackObama @chipfranklin It balanced rash decisions when our country was young. Our Republic was never supposed to be threatened from within or ruled by minority manipulation. Democracy is majority rule. There should be no wild card winners like football in an elected government.
