Standing tall within the historic landscape of Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh, the Badal Mahal Gateway reflects the refined craftsmanship that defines the region’s rich architectural heritage. It was built in 15th-16th century CE during the reign of Khilji Dynasty. Despite its name, no palace is associated with the structure. Such isolated gateways are common in Chanderi and were likely built to commemorate important events. With the height of about 50 feet, this double-arched entrance has circular, tapering bastions on the sides. It is quite an imposing and architecturally striking structure built against the backdrop of the Chanderi Hill-fort.

The Fort of Jaisalmer, perched atop Trikuta Hill, stands as a proud testament to the legacy of the Bhati rulers. Known as the ‘Sonar Killa’ or Golden Fort due to its distinctive yellow color sandstone, its foundation was laid on July 12, 1155 CE. This massive structure boasts 99 bastions atop Trikuta Hill, which rises approximately 250 feet. The fort measures around 1500 feet in length and 750 feet in width. Jaisalmer Fort is believed to have been completed before 1244 CE by Rawal Salivahan II, the son and successor of Jaisal. The fort’s formidable walls were gradually fortified from the 13th to the early 14th century CE, starting with the inner bastion walls. The fort witnessed further expansions and enhancements, including the construction of three parallel defensive walls. (1/2)

#Rakhigarhi, the largest #Harappan Site in the Indian subcontinent, was identified in 1964 for its archaeological potential, possibly serving as a provincial capital of the Harappan Civilization. The site is spread in more than 350 Hectare area, and has been identified as the largest Harappan civilization site by the various scholars. The ASI has declared six of the nine mounds as protected areas—four in 1996 and two more in 2024. Excavations at Rakhigarhi have been carried out in multiple phases: initially from 1997 to 2000 and more recently from 2021-2024. The iconic site of Rakhigarhi showcased a flourishing settlement from around 8 millennium ago which subsequently evolved into an urban metropolis known for its advanced planning and craftsmanship. Notable discoveries include a northern mound that housed an ancient lapidary workshop, where roughly three thousand unfinished beads (of carnelian, agate, chalcedony, and jasper) were found alongside pottery kilns, dyeing facilities, well-planned houses, streets, terracotta toys, seals, and ornaments. To the southwest is a high mound that likely functioned as a citadel. This area features fortified walls, guard chambers, and a rich array of artifacts made from copper, faience, and terracotta. Towards the east, excavations revealed brick structures, massive burnt brick walls, a dug well made of wedge-shape burnt bricks drains, kilns, hearths, and objects like animal figurines, chert blades, and copper tools. Another area showed remains of platforms and streets from the Mature Harappan period, as well as bone and ivory tools, pointing to early craft activities. Evidence of early Harappan habitation, including house complexes made from sun-dried bricks, was found in the eastern part of the site. To the north, a cemetery yielded eleven extended burials with grave goods such as beads, bangles, a copper mirror, and terracotta figurines, shedding light on Harappan mortuary practices and social customs. #ASI #HeritageSites #ArchaeologicalSurveyOfIndia #CultureUnitesAll

Arikamedu, located on the right bank of the Ariyankuppam River in present-day Puducherry, is one of the most significant archaeological sites known for the Indo-Roman trade relations during the Early Historic period in South India. The name Arikamedu means 'eroded mound' or 'mound of ruins'. The historical importance of this site was brought to light to the scholarly world by the French astronomer Le Gentil during his visit to Puducherry between 1768-1771. Systematic investigations began in 1945 under Mortimer Wheeler, followed by Casal between 1947–1950 and Vimala Begley from 1989–1992. These excavations revealed significant archaeological findings at the site. Wheeler divided the site into northern and southern sectors and brought to light number of brick built structural remains identified as ware house and dyeing vat. Casal’s subsequent excavation of the southern sector revealed similar findings and Iron Age level. A wide array of artifacts was recovered, these include Roman Rouletted Ware, Arretine Ware, Amphorae jar, Chinese Porcelain along with local specimens. Other significant findings include beads of glass, shell, bone, semi-precious stones, terracotta, metal, stone objects etc. Inscribed potsherds bearing texts in Tamil and Prakrit language were also found, adding linguistic insights. The more recent excavations by Begley pushed the site's antiquity to the middle-third century BCE, enhancing the understanding of trade and cultural exchange in the Indian subcontinent. #asi #archaeology #Puducherry
