The reason they ended up torpedoing the Liberty was that the Liberty was firing at the subs. An Israeli helicopter was sent immediately after the 12-15 minute attack. It was refused by the captain

Time is one of the things that people have difficulty tracking during a traumatic event. Israelis sent rescue immediately after the attack ended, but it was turned away by the US captain

@ygzgzot @EinatWilf Not sure what you mean by Hasbara, but the vast majority of the land that became modern day Israel was uninhabited. That is until the Jews came & worked to make it habitable. It was also during this time Arabs migrated to the area due to economic opportunity.
