BREAKING: The Supreme Court just reversed nearly 50 years of precedent and overturned Roe v. Wade, ending the federal constitutional right to abortion. We won't deny what a horrible moment this is. Half of the states are expected to ban abortion.
Forced pregnancy has serious consequences, including: ▪️ Enduring serious health risks from carrying to term and giving birth ▪️ Making it harder to escape poverty ▪️ Derailing education, career and life plans ▪️ Making it more difficult to leave an abusive partner
Women and people who can become pregnant have been forced into a second-class status. Millions of people have been thrown into uncertainty and fear that they may be forced to carry a pregnancy against their will.
Today’s decision is a gender, racial and economic justice catastrophe with deadly consequences. Women and people who can become pregnant have been forced into a second-class status. The impacts will fall hardest on Black women who already face a severe maternal mortality crisis.
Decades of racism, discrimination, and structural inequality within the health care system will mean that people of color, immigrants, LGBTQ people, young people and those trying to make ends meet will bear the brunt of forced pregnancy policies.
Because of today’s decision, our right to control our own bodies and futures will depend on where we live and who we are. Next is a patchwork approach as each state determines abortion rights and an unprecedented crisis with far-reaching impacts on our most basic freedoms.
@ACLU The concept of "women" would be a useful one to understand the population most impacted. 🤡🤡🤡
@ACLU Is citing LGBTQ people just a verbal tic or is it a contractual obligation?
@ACLU Bring back the right to be discriminating. This word used to be recognised as a good word. Discriminating people were allowed to discern the difference between good and bad. Now the boundaries between good and bad have been obliterated.
@ACLU ...and women with learning disabilities.
